Job description

About the Role

Join Lockheed Martin Space in driving the future of space technologies and innovation. We focus on creating resilient, cost-effective, and cutting-edge spacecraft solutions that empower national security and exploration. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing and developing spacecraft solar arrays — a critical component powering missions ranging from Mars exploration to GPS satellite deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support engineering teams by researching, designing, analyzing, and developing spacecraft components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Tackle technical challenges by devising effective solutions, ensuring sound engineering practices and timely issue resolution.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain engineering documentation, technical analyses, specifications, and drawings indispensable for product manufacturing and testing.
  • Create and release detailed drawings through CAD tools to support design implementation.
  • Collaborate across integrated product teams, interacting closely with engineers, manufacturing staff, suppliers, and customers to align project objectives.
  • Participate and represent in design and readiness reviews to ensure project integrity and quality compliance.
  • Work alongside manufacturing teams overseeing hardware build and testing within our adjacent production facilities.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience and education.
  • Proficiency using mechanical modeling software such as SolidWorks or CREO, and drafting skills.
  • Experience with composite structures and mechanisms design, especially in solar arrays, is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with drawing release processes in EPDM and understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical design principles, structures, mechanisms, and materials.
  • Strong desire to engage with cross-disciplinary teams including propulsion, thermal, and analysis specialists.
  • Ability to thrive in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for project requirements.
  • Must be a United States citizen to be eligible for this role.

Additional Information

Applicants express interest by applying and might be considered for other roles where their skills align. Remote work capability is allowed; however, some work responsibilities may require onsite presence at Lockheed Martin facilities. This is a full-time position based in Sunnyvale, CA.
