About the Role

The Planning discipline within Queen's University Belfast’s School of Natural and Built Environment enjoys a prestigious standing both nationally and internationally in education and research. To uphold and enhance this reputation, the university seeks a full-time, permanent Lecturer in Planning. The position involves joining a close-knit team of experienced and emerging scholars.

The appointee will be responsible for advancing the School’s research excellence by contributing original knowledge and impactful outcomes in planning and related domains, particularly aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and University Global Challenges. This requires a robust interdisciplinary approach and a critical research agenda focused on spatial planning and its interaction with urgent socio-spatial issues arising from the complex interplay of human environments, technology, economic and ecological transformations, justice, health, and governance across urban and rural settings.

The role demands establishing an independent research program that secures external competitive funding, publishes in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, supervises doctoral candidates, and fosters research impact through engagement and knowledge exchange activities.

Candidate Profile

• Must hold a relevant undergraduate degree with a 1st class or 2.1 honours or equivalent, and possess a completed PhD in Planning or a closely related discipline.
• Should demonstrate a solid professional and/or academic background supported by a distinguished portfolio of research outputs appropriate to their career stage.
• Experience delivering high-quality education to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students is essential.
• Capability in administrative tasks, self-management, and project oversight is required.
• Experience providing pastoral support within educational settings is expected.
• Must show effective teamwork abilities.
• Proven skill in presenting ideas clearly and engagingly is necessary.
• Commitment to fostering collaborative research and learning culture in accordance with university strategies is required.

Teaching and Administrative Duties

The successful candidate will teach professionally accredited planning modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, integrating planning practice with present and future societal challenges underpinned by theoretical perspectives. Responsibilities include contributing to teaching, assessment, organizational, and administrative duties within the School of Natural and Built Environment. This encompasses coordination and delivery of interdisciplinary modules, conducting lectures, facilitating group work, organizing field trips, supervising projects, and supporting varied student learning activities.
