Organization and Job Overview
This opportunity is offered by Yellowhead County, located in Alberta, Canada. The position is full-time and permanent, with responsibilities centered around operational readiness and emergency firefighting services under the guidance of the General Manager of Protective Services and the Fire Chief or their designate. The firefighter will be stationed according to staffing needs within the county.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily functional checks on all apparatus and equipment slated for use during the shift to ensure operational readiness.
- Attend all shifts punctually and in uniform, demonstrating professional reliability.
- Participate actively as a team member within the firefighting crew, following officer instructions.
- Maintain cleanliness and perform basic upkeep on firefighting apparatus, equipment, and facilities as directed by supervising officers.
- Engage in regular training sessions for fire and rescue equipment to maintain proficiency for daily operations.
- Respond promptly to emergency call-backs as required.
- Possess strong knowledge of firefighting techniques, emergency medical services, and safety practices.
- Maintain physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle to meet the demands of the role.
- Provide emergency assistance throughout Yellowhead County, supporting fire districts, industries, and other agencies upon request.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned within the scope of protective services.
Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- Certification meeting NFPA Standard 1001 for Firefighters or an equivalent credential.
- Valid Standard First Aid Level C and CPR certifications.
- Possession of a valid Class 3 Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
- Minimum of two years of experience in emergency services.
- Competent in defensive driving techniques.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with the public and volunteers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities.
- Proficient computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office applications.
- Organizational and supervisory skills are essential for the role.
Preferred Experience and Environment
- Post-secondary diploma or degree is an asset.
- NFPA Standard 1002 certification as an Operator is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of emergency service experience is advantageous.
- The working environment requires full-time presence at the station and readiness to respond to emergencies throughout the County under various weather and road conditions.
- Emergency duties often involve extended hours, high stress, hazardous scenarios, and significant physical exertion.
- Travel across the region, including emergency response travel, is part of the role.
- Participation in evening and weekend meetings or training sessions may occasionally be necessary.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is between 67,881 and 84,173 CAD. Yellowhead County provides a competitive benefits package to support its staff.
