About the Role
This position focuses on advancing and maintaining local developer workstations that serve global engineering teams. The selected candidate will be tasked with creating, overseeing, and safeguarding modern developer desktop setups, enhancing onboarding procedures, and ensuring uniform tooling across different operating systems. The contribution directly enhances developer efficiency, standardization, and governance within engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and uphold standardized developer desktop configurations for Windows and macOS platforms.
- Manage the installation and lifecycle of tools through package managers like Homebrew, Winget, Chocolatey, among others.
- Incorporate security configurations, proxy settings, and compliance controls into desktop builds.
- Maintain and support primary developer tools including IDEs, CLI utilities, SDKs, and version management tools.
- Oversee developer onboarding procedures and integrate these with existing platforms such as ServiceNow.
- Ensure smooth integration with internal artifact repositories like Nexus and Artifactory.
- Research and apply containerized developer environments such as VSCode devcontainers and GitHub Codespaces, collaborating with platform and security teams on governance and best practices.
- Implement policies and controls related to licensing, security baselines, and audit readiness; develop telemetry and reporting systems for desktop usage and tool adoption.
- Serve as the primary contact for developer environment support, working alongside Security, Desktop Engineering, and Platform teams.
- Contribute to documentation, self-service portals, and internal knowledge resources.
Candidate Profile
- 4 to 6 years of experience in IT Engineering, DevOps, or developer experience roles.
- Strong expertise in configuring and automating workstation environments on macOS and Windows.
- Proficient with package managers like Homebrew, Winget, Chocolatey.
- Familiar with artifact repositories such as Nexus and Artifactory, version control using Git, and CLI tools.
- Experience with scripting languages including Bash, PowerShell, and Python.
- Understanding of developer workflows and toolchains involving Node.js, Java, and Python.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with GitHub Codespaces, Dev Containers, or other ephemeral development environments.
- Knowledge of integrating internal developer platforms or onboarding portals.
- Background in regulated enterprise environments with software control and governance.
- Working knowledge of Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools such as Jamf, Intune, or Kandji.
