About the Role
The Data Center Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering expert technical guidance for mission-critical data center infrastructure. This role ensures that data center systems meet stringent Tier classification requirements, achieve resilience goals, and adhere to international industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate data center designs from conceptualization through detailed engineering and construction documentation phases.
- Oversee specialized systems including electrical, mechanical, ICT, fire and life safety, security, monitoring, and control components.
- Examine power distribution, uninterruptible power supplies, backup generators, cooling plants, building and energy management systems, as well as data center infrastructure management integration.
- Confirm adequacy of system capacity, equipment sizing, redundancy arrangements, and operational sequences.
- Assess Tier III and Tier IV designs focusing on concurrent maintainability and fault tolerance capabilities.
- Detect design deficiencies, operational risks, and vulnerabilities such as single points of failure.
- Ensure strict compliance with Uptime Institute Tier Standards, ANSI/TIA-942, ANSI/BICSI 002, alongside relevant local regulations.
- Facilitate coordination across engineering disciplines to resolve complex multidisciplinary design challenges.
- Review technical specifications, engineering drawings, calculations, equipment schedules, and contractor deliverables.
- Scrutinize commissioning strategies, testing protocols, method statements, and integrated system testing procedures.
- Engage in or observe functional performance and integrated system testing to verify operational readiness.
- Analyze testing outcomes and confirm implementation of necessary corrections.
- Assist with Tier certification processes, technical due diligence, tender assessments, and project proposals.
- Provide specialized counsel to clients, project teams, contractors, vendors, and commissioning agents.
Required Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Data Center Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Mandatory Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Specialist (ATS) certification.
- Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP) credential.
- At least 20 years of relevant engineering experience overall.
- Minimum of five years exclusively in data center project roles.
- Experience with two or more hyperscale or enterprise data centers exceeding 10 MW in capacity.
- Proven track record reviewing Tier III and Tier IV data center designs.
- Hands-on experience with commissioning and integrated system testing of critical facilities.
- In-depth knowledge of concurrent maintainability, fault tolerance, redundancy principles, and assessment of single point of failures.
- Comprehensive understanding of mission-critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Uptime Institute Tier standards, ANSI/TIA-942, and ANSI/BICSI 002 requirements.
- Capability to critically assess multidisciplinary engineering designs, technical documentation, calculations, and submissions.
- Strong analytical mindset complemented by technical problem-solving and risk evaluation skills.
- Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Self-directed professional attuned to delivering authoritative expert advice.
