About NBCC

New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) works to improve lives and strengthen communities across New Brunswick. The college values learning excellence, community impact, and social and economic development, and it aims to be a workplace where employees feel part of a larger mission.

Role Overview

NBCC is looking for a Custodian to support the Saint John campus. Reporting to the Facilities Manager in Facilities and Ancillary Services, this role focuses on keeping campus buildings, nearby grounds, and shared spaces clean, safe, and ready for daily use.

Position type: Regular
Location: Saint John, New Brunswick
Pay: CAD 23.90 per hour
Work pattern: 40 hours per week, with possible overtime, weekend shifts, and shift work

Key Duties

  • Keep assigned areas clean, tidy, and up to required standards.
  • Carry out cleaning and light maintenance in campus buildings and adjacent outdoor areas using appropriate tools and methods.
  • Wash, mop, scrub, wax, and polish floors and furniture.
  • Clean washrooms and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Remove and dispose of garbage.
  • Move heavy furniture and equipment when required.
  • Prepare classrooms and meeting rooms according to specified setups for instructors and students.
  • Handle grounds care tasks such as mowing grass, clearing snow, and cleaning walkways.
  • Take on related and similar duties as needed for college operations.

Working Conditions and Additional Information

The normal schedule is based on a 40-hour work week, but the position may require overtime, weekend work, and shift work. The role can involve physically demanding tasks, including standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds for extended periods. Employees are expected to have basic computer skills, including word processing, email, and data entry.

This is a unionized position governed by the CUPE Operational Services collective agreement. The posting may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level. Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada when they apply. NBCC may consider reasonable flexible work arrangements where operationally possible, but such arrangements cannot extend beyond the New Brunswick border, and employees must live within a reasonable distance of one of NBCC’s work locations in the province.

Qualifications

Candidates should have completed high school or earned a GED along with relevant work experience. A minimum of three months of recent, related experience is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered, and the minimum qualifications may be increased depending on the competition.

Applicants should also bring strong interpersonal and communication abilities, flexibility, professionalism, confidentiality, time management, organization, multitasking, problem-solving, analytical thinking, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience in a post-secondary setting is an asset.

The role requires proficiency with Microsoft Office, excellent oral and written English communication, and a valid driver’s licence because travel is required. Familiarity with cleaning products, tools, safe chemical handling, and proper cleaning techniques is important. Training on specialized equipment such as floor buffers, and certification related to biohazards or hazardous chemicals, may be required. WHMIS training will be provided.
