Overview

This role supports the creation and delivery of community-based initiatives that help reduce crimes against people and property in Marion County. It focuses on engaging residents, building neighborhood involvement, and strengthening local crime-prevention efforts.

Agency Summary

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is dedicated to serving the city with professionalism, integrity, and a strong emphasis on community policing. The department works to lower crime, reduce fear, and improve quality of life while reflecting the diversity and traditions of the community it serves. IMPD operates across six service districts, along with an Investigations Division, an Administration Division, and a Training Academy.

Equal Employment Opportunity

The City of Indianapolis and Marion County are equal opportunity employers. Employment consideration is provided without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability status. The organization values a workforce shaped by varied perspectives and lived experiences.

Position Responsibilities

  • Work with the District Commander and the central Crimewatch office to organize, guide, and encourage citizens involved in crime-prevention programs; review program results and adjust activities when needed, with Commander approval.
  • Plan and run Crimewatch block club meetings, give talks on crime-prevention methods, explain public and private support services, suggest practical solutions, and keep club records current so groups remain active.
  • Present information to neighborhood and community groups about how to prevent victimization and where to find help through the Crimewatch Office, IMPD, and related agencies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders and members to shape effective program plans and serve as a point of contact for Crimewatch activities and upcoming initiatives.
  • Coordinate with police personnel and other agencies, including the Prosecutor’s Office, to support victims when needed; serve as a liaison between the public and outside organizations; prepare activity summaries for the Commander and central Crimewatch office, including trends, meetings, travel, mileage, and future plans.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in social science or a related discipline is preferred, such as journalism, sociology, psychology, education, or anthropology. Relevant work experience may substitute for formal education at a rate of one year of experience for each year of education. The role requires the ability to schedule meetings during both daytime and evening hours, seven days a week. A valid Indiana driver’s license must be maintained to remain in the position. The successful candidate should be able to learn departmental and city procedures, recruit and coordinate volunteers, deliver effective presentations, and use audio-visual equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily carried out in a standard office environment. Crimewatch club activities may also take place in private residences and businesses.
