Overview
Jhpiego, affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University, is a global non-profit health organization with more than 50 years of experience delivering lifesaving health services in over 155 countries. The Eswatini office is part of the multi-nation RISE project, funded by the U.S. Government, addressing urgent health needs related to HIV/TB, maternal and child health, nutrition, malaria, and epidemic control through integrated and evidence-based approaches.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct periodic compliance audits and risk evaluations to verify operational efficiency, adherence to organizational policies, legal statutes, and donor regulations, providing actionable recommendations for enhancements.
- Collaborate closely with senior leadership to ensure robust internal control systems that effectively mitigate risks.
- Provide technical support and conduct spot-checks to confirm adherence to donor requirements, organizational standards, and relevant legal frameworks.
- Create and implement an annual compliance review schedule aligned with the country office's projects to ensure complete oversight.
- Perform monitoring visits to sub-recipients, documenting findings and supporting management and partners in resolving compliance issues; maintain oversight programs for sub-recipient monitoring.
- Identify strategic risks specific to Jhpiego Eswatini and recommend management strategies.
- Actively monitor operations to reduce incidents of fraud through rigorous review of internal practices.
- Regularly update senior management on the progress and implementation status of compliance measures.
- Lead focused investigations and special analytical assignments as necessary.
- Develop best practice guidelines for internal controls, lead staff orientation and training on compliance procedures, and contribute as a trainer in local compliance programs.
- Ensure conformity with U.S. disbarment policies and anti-terrorism laws.
- Promptly report serious misconduct or suspicions of fraud to top management and compliance leadership.
- Undertake additional projects as assigned by senior leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required; a Master’s degree is advantageous.
- Professional accounting certification such as CPA (Uganda), ACCA, or equivalent is required; additional credentials like CIA, CISA, or CFE are desirable.
- At least five years of related compliance experience within international NGOs or equivalent; alternatively, five years auditing NGOs in an auditing firm is acceptable.
- Solid grasp of internal audit processes, international standards, and current best practices.
- Experience with US Government-funded projects and familiarity with grant-related compliance preferred.
- Proficiency in IT tools, including computer-assisted audit techniques and financial systems such as QuickBooks Enterprise.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically as required.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and effective presentation capabilities for senior and project management.
