Job Overview

The Education Authority in Northern Ireland is seeking a Cleaner to join their team in Kilrea. The role involves carrying out cleaning tasks as designated by the supervisor to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene standards within the school premises.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sweeping, suction cleaning, mopping, spray cleaning, waxing, machine scrubbing, dry buffing, stripping, and re-polishing floors with suitable equipment.
  • Cleaning carpets and matting by removing stains using appropriate methods.
  • Sanitizing toilets, showers, fixtures, and fittings.
  • Cleaning and dusting ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings, and furniture surfaces up to 3.35 meters height.
  • Emptying and cleaning indoor litter bins and disposing of waste at designated collection points.
  • Assisting colleagues during absences and following all health and safety and cleaning standards.

Requirements and Essential Criteria

  • Health and Safety training compliance as per statutory obligations, including COSHH regulations.
  • Experience and knowledge relevant to school cleaning, cleaning methods, machinery, and health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to work independently using own initiative and to manage workload to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills in English, including the ability to understand instructions.
  • Effective organizational and team-working skills with a flexible and adaptable attitude toward duties.

Desirable Criteria

  • At least three months’ experience cleaning outside the home environment.
  • Experience using commercial cleaning equipment, such as buffing machines.

Additional Information

The successful candidate will be required to complete any necessary training provided by the Education Authority's cleaning services. Protective clothing and flat-soled enclosed-toe footwear must be worn while performing duties. All equipment must be used safely and maintained properly, reporting any defects immediately.

Applicants must undergo an Enhanced Disclosure criminal background check in compliance with safeguarding children and young people policies. The cost of the disclosure certificate is payable by the applicant, and details will be given at the pre-employment stage.

The role requires compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, statutory instruments, codes of practice, and the Authority’s procedures concerning absence reporting and covering colleagues’ absences.

Training opportunities include induction and refresher sessions, with acceptance of any required training to perform duties up to and including the current role.
