Assistant Metrologist

About the Role

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific as an Assistant Metrologist in Athlone, Ireland, contributing to advancing global health by ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory equipment. You will help maintain and calibrate critical instruments, support troubleshooting efforts, and enhance overall laboratory efficiency as part of a team driven to improve patient outcomes worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine scheduled maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Carry out scheduled calibrations and qualifications (IQ, OQ, PQ) of instrumentation.
• Perform remedial maintenance activities on active laboratory devices.
• Oversee installation processes for new laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Follow vendor instructions related to preventive maintenance, calibration, qualification, and repairs.
• Prepare for and address internal and external audits regarding laboratory instruments.
• Review laboratory support documentation for compliance with standard operating procedures and report any discrepancies.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Possess a high school diploma, secondary education, or equivalent formal vocational qualification.
• Technical certifications may be required for certain positions.
• At least two years of relevant experience or a suitable combination of education and hands-on experience to perform the job effectively.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of FDA and GXP regulatory frameworks.
• Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and equipment operation.
• Understanding of systems commonly used in contract research organizations or pharmaceutical industries.
• Basic analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong client-oriented approach with effective interpersonal communication.
• Ability to interact professionally with vendors, clients, and team members across organizational levels.
• Collaborative team-working skills.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work primarily takes place in laboratory or clinical settings with potential exposure to electrical and biological hazards.
• Occasional domestic travel and site visits may be required.
• Exposure to biological fluids, potential infectious agents, and rare exposure to irritants, radiation, toxic substances, and hazardous waste.
• Use of personal protective equipment such as eyewear, garments, and gloves is mandatory.
• Physical demands include prolonged standing, frequent mobility, repetitive hand movements, and moderate lifting up to 35 lbs.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks under changing conditions and maintain consistent attendance.

Work Schedule

Standard Monday to Friday working days.
