Transit Extraboard Driver

Overview

Become a vital part of the City of Pullman's Transit team by ensuring reliable and safe transportation services that connect and serve the community. As a Transit Extraboard Driver, you will operate fixed-route buses and paratransit vans, deliver exceptional customer service, and assist passengers, acting as an ambassador for the transit system. This role provides paid training, assistance in obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), competitive compensation, and half-time benefits, tailored for individuals passionate about driving and public service.

Role Summary

This part-time position supplements full-time drivers by covering absences, offering flexible scheduling and guaranteeing a minimum of four hours work per shift with potential up to ten hours within a 13-hour period. Drivers must maintain a neat appearance and wear uniforms during work shifts. The position reports directly to the Dispatcher and involves full compliance with safety and time schedules.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough pre-trip, mid-trip, and post-trip vehicle inspections including fluids, tires, and equipment, documenting any defects or damages.
• Operate buses and paratransit vans on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring passenger safety, fare collection, issuing transfers, and validating passes.
• Utilize wheelchair lifts and restraints for passenger accommodation, and manage vehicle climate controls for comfort.
• Engage positively with passengers to provide route and fare information, handle surveys, and secure lost articles found on vehicles.
• Handle passenger feedback and safety concerns tactfully, suggesting improvements to supervisors and reporting hazards or incidents promptly.
• Assist with facility cleanliness, bus fueling, distribution of schedules and pamphlets, and perform other administrative or operational tasks during downtime.
• Use two-way radio communication professionally, provide ADA stop announcements, and monitor passenger conditions during trips.
• Complete all necessary training, maintain consistent attendance, and uphold respectful interactions with staff and the public.

Selection Criteria and Qualifications

• Demonstrate motivation, public service commitment, and a strong work ethic.
• Operate vehicles safely while monitoring passenger behavior on-board and at stops.
• Complete classroom and practical training successfully.
• Drive large passenger vehicles independently and safely across varied weather and traffic conditions.
• Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills including courtesy, patience, and ability to de-escalate conflicts constructively.
• Ability to follow instructions, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively.
• Possess physical capability to perform job functions including lifting up to 50 pounds and prolonged sitting.
• Pass required drug screening, background checks, physical exams, and maintain a valid driver’s license with a safe driving history.
• Hold at least two years of experience driving passenger vehicles safely or equivalent training; ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with endorsements.

Work Conditions

The role sometimes involves sitting for long durations, exposure to varying weather, and occasional handling of chemicals and physical lifting. Safety-sensitive protocols apply, including random drug and alcohol testing. Noise levels vary from quiet in office environments to moderate in field settings.

Additional Details

The position provides flexibility with shifts including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. All duties are subject to change according to organizational needs. This is a non-exempt role under FLSA guidelines.
