Role Overview

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, or Nigeria (Lagos or Abuja), this permanent position forms part of the Statutory and Tax Centre of Excellence (CoE), primarily focusing on the Sub-Saharan Africa region with possible support across other regions as needed. The role is centered on advancing the CoE's strategic goals through management of local statutory reporting, tax strategy, and filing compliance in assigned countries. Ensuring all financial and tax reports are completed accurately and on-time in compliance with accounting standards and local tax laws is critical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead local statutory reporting and tax compliance activities within countries assigned.
  • Provide expert guidance to support financial and tax audits and assessments across multiple SSA countries, keeping teams updated on relevant rulings and changes that may affect operations.
  • Manage implementation of corrective measures from audits and ensure renewal submissions for rulings are timely to avoid coverage gaps.
  • Evaluate tax risks and regulatory changes impacting SSA country operations; advise business leaders strategically to mitigate risks and leverage opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with external auditors, tax advisors, government authorities, and internal British Council teams including group tax, accounting, and treasury.
  • Support financial accounting processes alongside the Managed Service Provider (MSP) to ensure timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Assertively engage with senior stakeholders to maintain compliance with financial reporting standards, country-specific tax laws, and internal policies.

Required Skills

  • Strong skills in financial and statutory accounting, tax reporting and compliance.
  • Proficiency in Excel and solid IT skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and influence decisions effectively.
  • Highly organized with a focus on meeting deadlines.
  • Skilled at building relationships across organizational levels.
  • Adaptability, independence, and initiative to thrive in dynamic environments.

Experience & Qualifications

  • A minimum of 4 years in finance controllership, tax accounting, and statutory reporting.
  • Experience handling corporate taxation, VAT, Withholding Tax returns, and statutory reporting across multiple countries within a global or regional setting.
  • Demonstrated ability resolving complex tax and technical accounting issues.
  • Strong grasp of financial control processes and accounting standards for commercial or charitable entities.
  • Effective business partnering, negotiation, and influencing skills.
  • Experience working with ERP systems.
  • Professional accounting qualification with at least 5 years post-qualification experience.

Additional Desirable Attributes

  • Experience in Shared Services Operations.
  • Background working in international and multicultural environments.
  • Involvement in change management projects or initiatives.
  • Familiarity with SAP software.
