About the Role
Google is seeking a Staff Research Scientist specializing in AI alignment to lead regional AI safety research efforts. This position is based in Singapore and requires onsite presence, with preference given to candidates already authorized to work in Singapore without visa sponsorship. The scientist will spearhead foundational research agendas, integrating academic breakthroughs into engineering practices to enhance AI models' robustness and trustworthiness.
Responsibilities
- Lead AI safety research initiatives regionally, focusing on AI alignment and socio-technical systems to develop advanced computational intelligence technologies.
- Establish and maintain collaborations with academic institutions, government agencies, and key stakeholders across the Asia-Pacific region.
- Guide the strategic incorporation of safety innovations and alignment methodologies into engineering frameworks and cutting-edge AI models.
- Work closely with regional engineering teams, global research sectors, and cross-functional groups to manage evolving technology policies and regulatory requirements.
- Engage with the research community by publishing in scientific forums, representing the company in regional events, and mentoring scholars and visiting researchers.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, a related area, or an equivalent level of practical experience.
- At least four years of research experience spanning multiple teams or projects.
- Expertise in machine learning disciplines including supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, adversarial machine learning, interpretability, robustness, safety, generative models, agentic AI, and multi-objective optimization.
- One or more scientific publications in recognized conferences or journals such as CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in forging research partnerships and collaborating with external academic or governmental entities.
- Knowledge of technology policy, compliance, and cultural factors in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Proven record of managing joint academic research projects and translating advanced research into scalable engineering solutions.
- First-authored works accepted at top machine learning, AI safety/security tracks, or human-computer interaction conferences.
