Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Overview

We have an opening for a dedicated Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist to join the supportive Blood Sciences team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, a centre known for its specialist surgical neonatal care, complex maternity services, and a dedicated Burns Unit.

Role and Responsibilities

The role involves working with advanced diagnostic equipment such as Abbott Alinity HQ analysers, Scopio digital morphology, Stago StarMax2 Haemostasis analysers, Alifax ESR Technology, and BioRad IH1000 Blood Grouping analyser. Candidates will rotate through different lab sections and participate in shift work including late evenings and nights to ensure continued quality care. Travel between the six hospital sites may also be required.

• Develop expertise in assigned diagnostic areas to deliver excellent laboratory services.
• Work independently making informed decisions while consulting higher-level staff as necessary.
• Manage workload efficiently to meet deadlines and maintain quality standards.
• Follow safe work protocols according to standard operating procedures and assist in quality assurance activities.
• Validate and authorize laboratory reports adhering to local guidelines and exercising professional judgment.
• Ensure documentation and electronic records meet Trust standards.
• Encourage compliance with Trust policies among team members.
• Identify, report, and act on clinical and non-clinical risks per Trust risk management practices.
• Maintain and calibrate equipment during autonomous working periods.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must be registered with the HCPC and have post-registration experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories with proven morphology skills. Completion of the BBTS and/or IBMS Specialist Diploma is mandatory.

The position offers a recruitment and retention premium of £4,000 paid in six monthly instalments, subject to eligibility. Relocation support may be provided according to Trust policies. Induction

New staff are required to attend the NWLP induction held on the first Monday of each month (excluding bank holidays). The induction includes laboratory training relevant to the role. Upcoming start dates in 2026 are October 5, November 2, and December 7, which candidates should consider before concluding current employment.
