Role Overview

The Senior Accountant will manage the company's daily accounting functions, oversee a small team handling Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, support financial closing activities, and ensure the precision of financial information. This position partners closely with the President and Fractional Controller, playing a vital role in establishing a formal credit department, refining ERP system processes, and facilitating company growth.

Primary Duties

• Manage daily accounting operations including receivables, payables, cash flow, and general accounting tasks.
• Assist in month-end and year-end closing procedures alongside the Fractional Controller.
• Maintain financial record accuracy and integrity.
• Support audits, financial reporting, and special projects as necessary.
• Monitor aging accounts to aid collection efforts.

Team Leadership Responsibilities

• Supervise two AR/AP team members, setting priorities, workflows, and performance standards.
• Provide coaching, training, and guidance to ensure precise and efficient transaction processing.
• Encourage accountability and continuous improvement within the accounting team.

Credit and Collections Management

• Design and implement a credit department and credit approval process.
• Create policies and procedures for customer credit management.
• Monitor and recommend customer credit limits based on exposure.
• Collaborate with sales and customer service to balance credit risk with business expansion.
• Oversee collection strategies and account resolutions.

Systems and Process Oversight

• Act as the main accounting contact for the ERP system, Comet.
• Optimize workflows between Comet and Sage Intacct accounting platforms.
• Identify automation and efficiency improvements and enhance reporting.
• Support system upgrades, implementations, testing, and user training.

Compliance and Administrative Duties

• Manage company licenses, permits, and regulatory filings to ensure compliance.
• Maintain internal controls and documentation for accounting functions.
• Support sales tax management and related compliance efforts.

Candidate Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in accounting or bookkeeping.
• Prior experience in supervising accounting personnel.
• Strong knowledge of receivables, payables, general ledger, and month-end close processes.
• Proficiency with ERP systems and accounting software.
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and related business tools.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience

• Familiarity with Sage Intacct.
• Experience using Comet ERP or similar systems in distribution, produce, or inventory-centric industries.
• Background in creating and managing credit policies and risk.
• Experience in food distribution, produce, wholesale, or inventory-based sectors.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
