About Kpler
Kpler is committed to simplifying global trade data in commodities, energy, and maritime industries by offering accessible market intelligence since 2014. With a diverse team exceeding 700 experts from over 35 countries, Kpler converts complex information into actionable insights to help clients remain competitive in dynamic markets.
Role Overview
We seek a Refineries Analyst to join the Oil & Chemicals unit, focusing on refining bottom-up models tied to real-time analytics. The position demands full ownership of data accuracy, maintenance, and quality assurance for refinery models integrating live crude flows, production numbers, pipeline volumes, and stock levels. Utilizing an internal Linear Programming model, you will optimize refinery capacities and yields, ensuring seamless incorporation into Kpler's overall Supply & Demand frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure data precision and upkeep offline event records for refinery models and regional summaries using the internal LP tool.
- Prioritize refining and validating models with strong data quality and domain expertise.
- Lead backtesting efforts with external datasets (e.g., EIA, JODI, IRR, ANP) to confirm models align with true market conditions.
- Leverage deep knowledge of refinery units such as distillation, reforming, FCC, and blending to enhance circuit models and regional supply-demand assessments.
- Automate and enhance data handling processes through Python and PostgreSQL to improve model fidelity.
- Collaborate closely with Data, Product, Engineering, and Sales teams to provide refinery insights supporting product development.
- Swiftly address internal and client data requests and inquiries.
Experience & Expertise
- Between 3 to 5 years experience in refinery economics, analysis, or LP modeling roles.
- Comprehensive understanding of refinery unit operations and economics including flows, pricing, regulations, and arbitrage.
- Hands-on experience with industry-standard Linear Programming software such as Aspen PIMS, AVEVA Unified/Spiral, or Haverly GRTMPS.
- Proficiency with Python and PostgreSQL for data management.
- Experienced in sourcing and utilizing external refinery datasets (EIA, JODI, IRR) for modeling.
- Strong skills in data-driven modeling, validation, and maintaining input data integrity.
Desirable Skills
- Expertise in refinery process optimization focusing on circuit-wide perspectives.
- Familiarity with data visualization techniques.
- Past contributions to SaaS product or data enhancement projects.
- Experience using AI tools like Claude or Cursor for data analytics and workflow optimization.
Personal Attributes
- Accountability for daily tasks with meticulous attention to detail.
- Self-motivated, effective in fast-paced, product-focused environments without supervision.
- Willingness to dedicate substantial effort to individualized refinery tuning and modeling.
- Motivated to find and apply data to guide model improvement.
- Comfortable engaging directly with clients.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a technical or quantitative discipline with proven application of modeling methodologies in professional or research settings.
