Job description

Position Overview

Miller Waste Systems is seeking a dedicated Occupational Health & Return-to-Work Coordinator to oversee workplace injury and return-to-work programs across various provinces. This role ensures strict compliance with workers' compensation laws and company policies while acting as a liaison among injured employees, site supervisors, and provincial Workers' Compensation Boards across Canada. The position offers a hybrid work environment combining office tasks with frequent site visits requiring flexibility in hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end claims including injury reporting, case tracking, and claim resolution within statutory deadlines to prevent penalties.
  • Act as primary contact for injured employees, supervisors, healthcare providers, and provincial board representatives to coordinate necessary documentation and claim updates.
  • Review medical submissions carefully while safeguarding employee privacy to support return-to-work plans.
  • Conduct regular site visits to operational locations such as transfer stations and landfills, supporting injury reporting, facilitating meetings, and assisting in developing modified duty plans tailored to medical restrictions and local physical demands analyses.
  • Ensure adherence to all on-site health and safety protocols, including personal protective equipment usage during site visits.
  • Monitor compliance with workers' compensation legislation, company policies, collective agreements, and privacy standards, and escalate complex cases as needed.
  • Maintain and update comprehensive digital tracking systems and dashboards to monitor claims status, financial impacts, and return-to-work progression.
  • Prepare analytical reports on claims activity and lost time while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Create and update educational materials, including job aids and workflow guides, to assist supervisors and employees in understanding reporting and accommodation policies.
  • Optimize travel scheduling by balancing virtual meetings with necessary on-site visits, prioritizing impactful case reviews and coaching.
  • Perform additional operational and administrative tasks, including cross-functional HR and safety projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • College diploma or university coursework in Human Resources, Occupational Health & Safety, Disability Management, or related fields, or an equivalent mix of education and 1–4+ years of experience with provincial workers' compensation administration and return-to-work plans.
  • Familiarity with Canadian workers' compensation reporting requirements, with mandatory knowledge of WSIB Ontario and preferred multi-provincial experience.
  • Experience with provincial employer portals, especially WSIB Ontario, and proficiency in maintaining secure digital document repositories.
  • Possession of a valid Class G driver's license (or regional equivalent) with access to a reliable vehicle, compliant insurance covering business use, and a driving record meeting company standards.
  • Capability to maintain a 40-hour work week with flexible start/end times to meet operational demands and ability to travel approximately twice weekly to Miller Waste locations, including occasional trips to the corporate office.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is considered an advantage.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel for daily data entry, dashboard updating, and data tracking with advanced proficiency in formulas and pivot tables being a plus.
  • Experience working with out-of-province workers' compensation boards such as WCB Alberta or WorkSafeBC is a beneficial asset.
