Overview
The County of Los Angeles seeks a dedicated Librarian I to join the LA County Library team, which serves a population of 3.4 million across 3,000 square miles, managing 86 libraries and multiple mobile units including bookmobiles and literacy outreach vehicles. Key Responsibilities
- Assist patrons by responding to reference questions, providing reading recommendations, and guiding customers in navigating library resources and layouts.
- Organize and deliver various library programs such as youth reading initiatives, book talks, and prepare supporting materials like bibliographies and displays.
- Offer support across service areas including youth and adult programming and specialized departmental tasks.
- Manage physical and digital library collections encompassing print materials, audiovisual content, and government documents.
- Promote library services and programs through announcements, online content updates, and community outreach, including school visits.
- Collaborate with committees to enhance library policies, programs, and training efforts.
- Provide instruction on digital printing, computer basics, and technology use to individuals and groups.
- Maintain records and generate regular reports on library services and activities for monitoring purposes.
- Supervise and guide adult and teen volunteers in library-related activities, providing necessary training and oversight.
- Perform technical services such as cataloging, metadata creation, authority control, and materials processing.
- Serve as acting lead in absence of supervisor to ensure seamless library operations.
Requirements
- Possession of a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an accredited institution is mandatory at the time of application.
- Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to arrange alternative transportation for job duties.
- Physical capability to stand or walk extensively, bend, stoop, lift objects occasionally over 25 pounds, and frequently lift 10-25 pounds as part of moderate physical demands.
Application Process & Assessment
The recruitment is ongoing with applications accepted starting July 27. Candidates will undergo a structured oral interview weighing 100% of the total score, covering areas including customer service, library knowledge, judgement, program coordination, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. A minimum score of 70% is required to be placed on the eligible list, valid for 12 months for filling vacancies.
