Lead Design Engineer - Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Design Engineer specializing in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with 8 to 12 years of professional expertise. This role is based in Abu Dhabi and requires strong technical and leadership competencies in battery technology and associated renewable energy systems.

Technical Expertise

• In-depth understanding of battery chemistry and related technologies.
• Experience with duty cycling and performance measurements such as Round Trip Efficiency and Cycle Life to optimize design for efficiency and reliability.
• Expertise in battery safety protocols and battery inverter systems architecture.
• Proven background in project engineering and delivering energy storage projects within engineering or consulting sectors.
• Hands-on knowledge of system studies and DC/DC converter operations.
• Familiarity with hybrid renewable energy systems encompassing solar photovoltaic, wind energy, and battery storage integration.
• Proficiency in MATLAB Simulink and ETAP software tools.
• Strong competence in battery and inverter system design along with integration into medium and high voltage substations.
• Working knowledge of MATLAB scripting, the HOMER modeling tool, and comprehensive simulation and control logic understanding.
• Expertise in panel architecture, ventilation, and temperature rise calculations, as well as insight into battery inverter operating modes such as VAR and Power Factor modes.

Engineering & Analytical Skills

• Ability to conduct detailed root cause analyses and formulate practical solutions.
• Skilled in developing innovative ideas, contributing to value engineering, and delivering cost-optimized designs with enhanced performance and reliability.
• Experience in preparing technical and tender specifications, alongside the evaluation of tender submissions.
• Competence in engineering reviews, quality assurance, and approval of design drawings, reports, and deliverables.
• Developing Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) specifications, test plans, and assessing test outcomes.
• Strict adherence to quality management and health and safety standards while following company design management procedures.

Coordination & Project Support

• Providing expert technical advice and assistance during the construction and installation phases.
• Daily collaboration with multidisciplinary design teams including civil engineers, instrumentation specialists, and CAD technicians.
• Coordinating with various departments and external teams like surveyors, transport, and environmental groups.
• Ensuring project deliverables align with deadlines and meet client scope, specifications, and quality expectations.
• Serving as the main technical liaison for vendors and clients during design stages as necessary.
