Overview
Samaritans, Inc., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit focused on suicide prevention, is seeking a seasoned Human Resources Manager to lead and enhance HR functions across the entire employee lifecycle. Reporting to the Chief Administration Officer (CAO), this role involves acting as a trusted adviser to leadership and employees, managing employee relations, recruitment, compliance, and fostering a positive workplace culture for a hybrid and remote team.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the main HR contact for employee relations, applying sound judgment and confidentiality to resolve performance issues, conduct concerns, and workplace conflicts.
- Lead and manage performance appraisal processes, advising managers, implementing corrective actions and Performance Improvement Plans, and monitoring outcomes to ensure consistent standards.
- Conduct internal investigations with accurate documentation and work with leadership on prompt, compliant resolutions.
- Manage the employee offboarding process including exit interviews, trend analysis, compliance, and coordination of final compensation and benefits.
- Collaborate with CAO to support performance review cycles and employee development initiatives with data-driven recommendations.
- Oversee full-cycle recruitment, including job postings, sourcing, screening, interviews, reference/background checks, and maintaining records via ATS.
- Partner with hiring managers to define job requirements and ensure equitable, compliant hiring practices.
- Lead onboarding ensuring compliance, operational readiness, and a positive experience to promote engagement and retention.
- Continuously evaluate recruitment and onboarding processes to enhance candidate experience and compliance.
- Maintain, audit, and manage employee records aligned with federal, state, and local laws and organizational standards.
- Provide guidance on HR policies, leave programs, workplace accommodations, and risk mitigation in collaboration with the Senior Director of Administration.
- Work with leadership to develop and update HR policies ensuring compliance and operational effectiveness.
- Analyze HR operations to identify process improvements enhancing service delivery and employee experience.
- Stay current on employment law changes and HR best practices to inform leadership appropriately.
- Provide backup support for biweekly payroll processing and act as a resource for routine benefits inquiries.
- Support benefits programs such as annual open enrollment and benefits education alongside the Senior Director of Administration.
Qualifications and Skills
- 5 to 8 years of comprehensive HR experience demonstrating ownership of core HR and people operations functions.
- Strong knowledge of multi-state employment laws and HR operational best practices.
- Experience managing employee relations, conducting investigations, and resolving issues in a timely manner.
- Proficiency with full-cycle recruitment and onboarding across varied roles.
- Skilled in using HR Information Systems (HRIS), Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Strong interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills, able to maintain professionalism under pressure.
- Excellent judgment, decision-making ability, and accountability in managing time-sensitive matters.
- A self-starter capable of independent work and proactive task management.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred.
- Experience in nonprofit, mission-driven, or multi-site organizations is a plus.

Salary and Benefits
The annual salary ranges from $85,000 to $100,000 depending on experience and skills. Benefits include employer-matched 401(k) with safe harbor matching, fully covered short and long-term disability, life insurance coverage up to $100,000, health (85% employer premium coverage), dental (90% employer premium coverage), and vision insurance options, plus Flexible Spending Accounts and Employee Assistance Programs. The role offers a hybrid work schedule with 2 required in-office days per week and six fully remote work weeks annually. Mileage reimbursement is provided for off-site work-related travel.
