Data Engineer

About the Role

Citywire's data platform is integral to powering a range of internal and external products, from industry ratings to advanced AI systems. We seek a Data Engineer to develop pipelines and data models that form the platform's backbone, transforming stakeholder requirements into reliable, scheduled, and monitored production systems.

This is designed as a growth opportunity where you will collaborate closely with the platform lead, gaining mentorship in architectural design, engineering best practices, and production-scale AI tooling.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop production-quality data models using dbt, translating analytical needs and SQL queries into durable data layers covering source, warehouse, and reporting with full ownership of documentation, testing, and scheduling orchestrated by Prefect.
• Participate in decomposing legacy fund and manager performance calculations into a modern event-driven AWS setup involving EventBridge, SQS, Lambda, S3, and RDS, and create parallel-processing pipelines using Spark on EMR.
• Collaborate to design and maintain AI data models incorporating fund/share class information, clickstream, CRM, and financial data.
• Implement comprehensive observability strategies including structured logging, metrics collection, dead-letter queue monitoring, and alerting to maintain operational health of pipelines.
• Work directly with analysts and data quality teams throughout development, deployment, and maintenance phases.

Desired Experience and Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with dbt projects including incremental models, testing strategies, and consideration of downstream dependencies; prior experience with BigQuery or other warehouses is advantageous.
• Proficient skills in Python and SQL, with a strong emphasis on testing code destined for production environments.
• Practical knowledge of deploying and debugging within AWS environments, with openness to learning specific platform services.
• Strong command line interface skills, including working with containerized setups and shell scripting for automation and troubleshooting.
• Ability to leverage AI-based coding tools responsibly, applying critical evaluation and rigorous testing before implementation.
• Excellent data intuition to validate outputs beyond automated checks, identifying anomalies and assuring business logic integrity.
• Demonstrates ownership of deliverables, learning from production incidents, and prefers personal accountability over delegation.
• Effective collaborator who can translate complex business queries from analysts into optimized, maintainable data solutions.

Additional Skills (Willingness to Learn Provided)

• Familiarity with Spark on EMR, workflow orchestration tools like Prefect, and search technologies such as OpenSearch.
• Understanding of event-driven architecture patterns and graph database technologies like SurrealDB.
• Background or interest in financial services or asset management domains.
