Role Overview

The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) leads the development and execution of commercial strategies for the mining sector to ensure steady revenue growth, market presence expansion, client diversification, and optimal management of the mineral sales portfolio. This executive position involves oversight of all commercial operations, including sales, marketing, pricing, offtake contracts, business development, trading, client relationships, and strategic alliances.

The CCO collaborates closely with departments such as operations, finance, logistics, technical services, and senior leadership to maximize the commercial potential of mining assets while aligning with the organization's long-term objectives. Operating at the Executive Committee and Board levels, the role acts as the chief commercial advisor regarding mining investments and market opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and execute a comprehensive commercial strategy for the mining portfolio.
  • Steer growth in revenue and profit margins across diverse mining commodities.
  • Explore and capitalize on new global markets, customers, and commercial prospects.
  • Create pricing, sales, and contract frameworks consonant with current market dynamics.
  • Plan long-term commercial initiatives and forecast demand effectively.
  • Build and maintain strategic client relationships and lead negotiations for offtake and supply contracts.
  • Expand global sales channels and optimize product placement and market diversification.
  • Monitor industry trends and competitor positioning within commodity markets.
  • Scout and foster acquisition, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and investment opportunities.
  • Network extensively with key industry figures, governmental bodies, and trading entities.
  • Lead commercial due diligence for prospective mining ventures and support geographic and sector expansions.
  • Evaluate commercial risks relating to commodity pricing, logistic issues, and market volatility, taking a proactive role in risk mitigation.
  • Ensure adherence to international trade laws and corporate governance standards.
  • Work in tandem with finance teams on hedging and safeguarding revenue streams.
  • Coordinate with operations and logistics to optimize product delivery, cost management, and alignment with demand.
  • Provide consistent commercial performance reports to management and maintain stakeholder and investor relationships.
  • Represent the company professionally in industry forums, conferences, and trade events.
  • Lead the commercial team by nurturing a culture emphasizing accountability, client focus, and excellence.
  • Develop leadership capabilities, succession plans, and talent pipelines within the commercial department.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Geology, Finance, or related fields is required.
  • A Master’s degree or MBA is preferred.
  • Fifteen to twenty years of experience in the mining sector with at least a decade in senior commercial leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in handling commodities such as phosphate, copper, gold, iron ore, coal, nickel, rare earth elements, lithium, or industrial minerals.
  • Proven success in global commodity sales, marketing, trading, and negotiating extensive offtake agreements and partnerships.
  • Preferably experience with multinational mining corporations.
  • Strong record of driving revenue increment and market growth.

  • Established networks among mining customers, traders, governments, smelters, and investors.
