Role overview
An opening is available in the Immunology Department at Scunthorpe General Hospital for a part-time HCPC-registered Band 5 Biomedical Scientist, or for a trainee Biomedical Scientist.
About the laboratory
The Immunology laboratory at Scunthorpe serves as the central Immunology hub for the Path Links network, which is the pathology service covering Greater Lincolnshire. The facility is equipped with a range of specialist systems, including Helena CZE electrophoresis and immunofixation analysers, Thermo Fisher Unicap 250 allergy and autoimmunity platforms, Binding Site Optilite, Beckman Coulter Navios flow cytometer, Euroimmun blotmaster, Werfen DS2 ELISA platform, and QL3000 slide processor.
What the role involves
The post sits within a multidisciplinary pathology team delivering reliable, high-quality diagnostic services across a 24-hour operation for patients, clinicians, and general practitioners. Once fully trained, the successful candidate is expected to work independently, although early training will be supervised by experienced Biomedical Scientists.
Registration and qualifications
For the specialist post, applicants must hold HCPC registration and have completed the IBMS registration portfolio. Candidates applying for the trainee route should hold an IBMS-accredited degree. Only applicants who have successfully completed the Specialist Portfolio will be considered for the specialist position. Prior laboratory experience in a relevant setting would be beneficial.
Skills and working expectations
The role requires strong communication and IT abilities, as well as the capacity to stay effective under pressure and resolve technical issues confidently.
Organisation and service context
Path Links is a networked pathology service providing a broad range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples. Its five main sites are Lincoln, Grantham, Boston, Scunthorpe, and Grimsby. All Path Links laboratories hold UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation and are regularly reviewed by external UKAS assessors to confirm compliance with the required standards and maintain service quality for users.
About the wider partnership
The Humber Health Partnership is among the largest acute and community NHS partnership arrangements in the country, supporting more than one million patients each year and managing a budget of over £1.3 billion. The partnership brings together Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, with ambitions to deliver high-quality hospital and community services for the 1.65 million people it serves. Across the two trusts, nearly 20,000 staff are employed at key hospital sites including Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital, Goole and District Hospital, Hull Royal Infirmary, and Castle Hill Hospital. As teaching hospitals working with Hull York Medical School, both trusts also contribute to research in biomedical research, primary care, palliative medicine, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, vascular surgery, cancer surgery, and oncology.
Culture and values
The organisation promotes a workforce that is diverse, inclusive, innovative, skilled, and caring, with the aim of delivering excellent care to patients and creating a positive future for employees, the partnership, and the wider community.
