Join Westerner Park and build a fulfilling career where growth, purpose, and opportunity intersect. We are looking for a skilled Assistant Manager of Facilities & Safety Operations to ensure our facilities are safe, compliant, and prepared for events in Red Deer, Alberta.
Role Summary
This leadership role is pivotal in supporting daily facility operations, maintenance, and ongoing enhancements of buildings, grounds, infrastructure, and safety programs at Westerner Park. Reporting to the General Manager, Facilities & Park Operations, the Assistant Manager leads maintenance and grounds teams, manages contractors, preventive maintenance, capital projects, and safety initiatives to deliver exceptional experiences for guests, employees, tenants, and event organizers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support Westerner Park’s occupational health and safety program, organizing workplace inspections, hazard assessments, safety meetings, incident recordings, training, audits, and certification monitoring.
- Chair and coordinate the Joint Health and Safety Committee, including meeting facilitation, documenting, recommending actions, and following up.
- Perform facility inspections to identify hazards, maintenance issues, and operational risks, ensuring corrective measures are undertaken.
- Keep thorough health and safety documentation, compliance reports, and training records aligned with regulations.
- Ensure adherence to health, safety, environmental, permitting, and site-specific protocols by staff, contractors, and vendors.
- Serve as a primary onsite contact for regulators, inspectors, contractors, insurance agents, and external partners.
- Oversee daily upkeep, repair, and operations of buildings, infrastructure, mechanical and plumbing systems, utilities, parking, walkways, grounds, and the RV Resort.
- Develop, apply, and monitor preventive maintenance programs to extend asset life, enhance reliability, and minimize downtimes.
- Respond promptly to urgent operational challenges by troubleshooting building systems and coordinating repairs.
- Maintain facilities in a safe, clean, accessible, and visually attractive condition, ready for events involving staff, guests, tenants, volunteers, and organizers.
- Support sustainability through effective utility management, equipment planning, and cost-effective maintenance.
- Supervise maintenance, trades, and grounds staff, prioritizing safe, efficient work execution aligned with organizational goals.
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance reviews to cultivate a collaborative and safety-conscious team.
- Schedule daily tasks, procure materials, manage permits, oversee contractor work, ensure quality standards, and monitor project timelines.
- Act on behalf of the General Manager, Facilities & Park Operations, providing leadership continuity when necessary.
- Track and report on maintenance, compliance, safety, inspection, and project metrics.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, work orders, contractor services, inspections, and certifications.
- Manage contractor and vendor engagements to ensure quality, timeliness, safety adherence, and contractual compliance.
- Assist in budget preparation, procurement, infrastructure renewal, and capital improvements.
- Collaborate across departments to align facility operations with organizational priorities, event needs, and community services.
- Perform other relevant tasks to meet ongoing operational requirements.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Journeyman certification in plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or building systems; diploma or degree in Facility Management, Building Operations, Occupational Health & Safety, Project Management or a related discipline, or an equivalent education and experience combination.
- At least five years of progressive experience in facility management, maintenance, trades supervision, construction, or occupational health and safety.
- Proven leadership experience managing maintenance, trades, contractor, or grounds teams within complex industrial, commercial, or multi-building environments with public interaction.
- Deep understanding of preventative maintenance, building systems, asset management, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation, and workplace safety protocols.
- Track record of managing contractors, maintenance programs, capital projects, inspections, and compliance activities.
- Excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills for managing competing priorities in a dynamic work setting.
- Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office software.
- Possession of valid Class 5 driver's license.
- Current First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and other pertinent safety certifications, or ability to obtain them promptly.
