Role Summary

This opportunity is a temporary, part-time laboratory support role based in Houston, Texas. The selected candidate will help the accessioning team receive incoming specimens, review them for quality, and enter them into the laboratory workflow so they can be processed correctly.

Key Duties

• Accept incoming sample packages, open them, and record their receipt.
• Review, sort, and direct specimens to the appropriate next step in the laboratory process.
• Enter and verify sample information in the correct systems and databases.
• Identify and escalate sample problems such as missing details, barcode mismatches, unpaid accounts, damage, or collection issues, and help resolve them.
• Assist, when needed, with retrieving samples from USPS.
• Keep tracking records and other departmental paperwork up to date.
• Handle assigned administrative and organizational tasks that support the department.
• Support basic lab-area work such as racking tips, filling tubes, washing racks, cleaning, and keeping supplies organized.
• Maintain a clean work environment through routine daily and weekly tasks, including trash removal, sweeping, and wiping down surfaces.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or GED is required.
• Strong computer skills and the ability to enter data quickly and accurately are important; a typing speed of 40–50 words per minute is preferred.
• Excellent attention to detail is needed to perform repetitive tasks with consistent accuracy.
• Experience handling specimens or sample workflows, including labeling, sorting, logging, and following strict procedures, is beneficial.
• The role requires the ability to understand operational instructions and SOPs quickly and apply them correctly.
• Once trained, the candidate should be able to work independently with limited supervision while staying productive.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills are necessary for team coordination and reporting discrepancies.
• A strong sense of integrity and trustworthiness is essential, along with a strict commitment to confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
