Job Description
The Processing Mechanic on the second shift will be responsible for maintaining and repairing various mechanical and electrical equipment within a food processing facility. This role demands expertise in mechanical systems, electrical controls, fluid power, welding, fabrication, and manufacturing operations. The technician will troubleshoot medium to high complexity issues, support operation phases, and perform multiple maintenance tasks to ensure smooth production.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate work orders to determine required tools, parts, manpower, and time.
- Respond promptly to urgent maintenance calls, arriving equipped with essential tools.
- Interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and manuals.
- Maintain accurate activity records and logs of maintenance actions.
- Monitor equipment operation to detect and diagnose malfunctions.
- Disassemble, repair, replace parts of mechanical machinery and reassemble for testing.
- Conduct subsystem/component tests using specialized tools to pinpoint issues.
- Create replacement parts via welding, cutting, or sheet metal work as needed.
- Implement preventive maintenance procedures for mechanical systems and install new equipment including utility connections.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain machinery, piping, and electrical systems adhering to manufacturer specs, local codes, and safety policies.
- Perform scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on pumps, slicers, packaging, and other manufacturing equipment.
- Use various hand tools and devices for general mechanical maintenance tasks.
Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma or GED with at least 1 year of relevant industrial mechanical or food manufacturing maintenance experience; alternatively, 4 years of direct maintenance experience.
- Preferred: Vocational, technical diploma or associate degree in maintenance or related field.
- Teamwork skills with the ability to interact effectively with coworkers and contractors.
- Forklift or powered industrial truck operation skills (genie lift, scissor lift, etc.).
- Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Proficient in reading work orders, preparing daily reports, and interpreting equipment manuals.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Working conditions include exposure to wet/humid environments, extreme non-weather-related cold and heat, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.
- Typical noise levels range from moderate to loud within production areas.
- Occasional lifting/moving of up to 75 pounds; regularly lifting/moving up to 50 pounds with assistance or mechanical aids.
- Visual requirements include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Frequent physical activities include standing, walking, hand use, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and communication.
