Role Summary
The Meter Reader, reporting to the Meter Services Supervisor, performs daily and special readings of gas, electric, and water meters. The role involves extensive walking in outdoor conditions, requires excellent time management abilities, adaptability, and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Read meters on client premises according to schedule and special requests.
- Complete assigned routes efficiently, assign sequence numbers for new services, and adjust meter reading routes as needed.
- Inspect meters for damage or malfunctions and report to supervisors.
- Evaluate and manage unsafe conditions, including cleaning meter boxes.
- Operate electric, gas, and water meter reading devices and various hand tools like screwdrivers, pliers, gas detectors, and shovels.
- Utilize printed resources such as service orders, maps, manuals, and computer printouts.
- Assist in training new meter readers.
- Walk extensively—up to 20 miles daily—in varied weather, and exert physical effort handling tools and equipment.
- Handle customer communications professionally, referring complaints appropriately and providing general meter service information.
- Use phones, tablets, or computers to maintain communication and reporting.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Candidate Qualifications
- Required: Minimum some high school education, 18 years or older, valid driver's license, and at least 1 year of experience working outdoors. Training for meter reading provided.
- Preferred: High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of prior meter reading experience.

Compensation
The position pays $18 per hour.
