Position Overview
This role is based in the Information Technology Office at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The IT Specialist (System Administrator) is responsible for supporting the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hardware and software to ensure continuous operation and availability of the museum's IT infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, test, and maintain both hardware and software to keep NMAAHC's IT systems operational and reliable.
- Carry out basic administrative tasks related to system management, assist with IT licensing renewals, and help with procurement of IT equipment and software.
- Provide technical support and exceptional customer service by resolving computer and IT-related issues presented by users.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet career or career-conditional employment eligibility, including mandatory Selective Service registration for males born after 1960. Promotion candidates must fulfill a one-year time-in-grade requirement within 30 days of the job announcement closing.
Basic Competencies: Candidates must demonstrate IT-related experience showcasing proficiency in Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, and Problem Solving.
Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that includes troubleshooting diverse devices, installing network OS and protocols, testing network software, monitoring performance, backups and restores, and assisting with licensing and IT purchases.
Education Option: Alternatively, one year of graduate-level education or outstanding academic achievement in relevant fields such as computer science, engineering, information science or related disciplines can substitute the experience requirement. Acceptable academic credentials include a bachelor's degree with a strong GPA or honors in the appropriate major.
Additional Details: Part-time and unpaid experiences, including volunteer work, are recognized. A combination of education and experience to qualify is permitted. This position falls within a bargaining unit and may offer recruitment incentives subject to approval and service agreements.
