Job Overview
We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) specializing in Excavators to join our team and contribute to several projects across Canada. This role involves operating 336 and/or 470 excavators on heavy civil earthworks, construction, road building, and mining projects. You will work primarily on a project basis with varying rotation schedules (commonly 14/7 or 21/7) and 12-hour shifts, both days and nights. Travel to job sites may require approved flights or drive-in/drive-out arrangements, with accommodations provided on-site.
Responsibilities
- Perform earth moving tasks including grading, stripping overburden, stacking, and stockpiling materials.
- Participate in lease building, reclamation, road and pad construction, and culvert installation.
- Carry out routine inspections of equipment, checking tires, fluids, lights, and brakes to ensure safety and functionality.
- Follow project specifications and quality guidelines to maintain standards.
- Maintain clear communication with supervisors and site personnel to ensure efficient operations.
- Adhere strictly to company safety procedures, including Safe Work Procedures and personal protective equipment usage.
- Monitor the job environment for hazards including proximity to other equipment and personnel, performing Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) as required.
- Demonstrate good judgement, problem-solving capabilities, and an ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Operate 2-way radio communication devices effectively.
- Manage track cleaning of equipment and assist ground personnel when needed.
- Perform additional labor tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years recent experience operating various sizes of excavators (336 and/or 470 models) safely and efficiently in heavy civil earthworks, construction, road building, or mining projects.
- Experience in stripping overburden, stacking, stockpiling, and land reclamation across different ground conditions, including soft ground.
- Proven work on ice road construction projects.
- Familiarity with technical specifications and grade plans related to roads, oilfield leases, and pad building is preferred.
- Ability to perform finishing or trimming tasks is an advantage.
- Physical capability to repeatedly lift loads up to 50 lbs safely and maintain fitness for a physically demanding role.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions (rain, snow, sun).
- Valid driver's license and CSA-approved safety boots (minimum 6-inch height, fully laceable).
- Completion of required safety training, including Alcohol and Drug Screening, Fitness-to-Work assessment as per Alberta OHS and Human Rights Act, Health history review, Pre-medical evaluation, musculoskeletal exam, strength and mobility tests.
- Mandatory safety tickets: CSO/BSO/CSTS-09/OSSA Regional, Intermediate First Aid with CPR & AED, H2S Alive, Bear Awareness (in-class), Ground Disturbance (HEO).
- Flexibility to adhere to rotational schedules up to 12 hours per shift for days and nights as project demands, with travel and lodging provided.
Employment Terms
This is a project-based position, with employment tied to the duration of specific projects. Employment may conclude upon project completion or the end of your assigned role. Future placement on other projects is possible but not guaranteed.
