Job Overview
Based in Kielder, North East England, this role supports the beat forester in managing forest lands by undertaking a variety of practical forestry operations and inspections. The position promotes a strong health and safety culture, emphasizing vigilance and care in all activities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform restocking and establishment tasks including hand planting, building tree guards, fence repairs, and vegetation management.
- Carry out tree maintenance such as high pruning, cutting back, and felling to maintain access and assist with harvesting.
- Conduct tree safety surveys and remedial chainsaw work as required.
- Engage in surveying activities like measuring, tariffing, assessing tree safety, and stocking densities.
- Collect and maintain accurate operational data and records.
- Support key program delivery by transporting plants, materials, and supplies across Kielder Forest.
- Help maintain recreational facilities by repairing walking and mountain bike trails.
- Operate and upkeep tools and equipment to meet operational and health and safety standards.
- Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to plan and execute effective work programs aligned with Forestry England’s goals.
- Promote professionalism as a representative of Forestry England.
- Perform risk assessments adhering to high health and safety standards, guided by the Forest Industry Safety Accord (FISA).
- Carry out any additional tasks as reasonably assigned by management.
Candidate Profile
- Practical experience in forestry, countryside, or environmental management.
- Basic knowledge of forestry, arboriculture, nature conservation, outdoor recreation, and countryside matters.
- Skilled with various hand tools.
- Familiar with health and safety systems relevant to outdoor work, including risk assessments and FISA guidelines.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work independently and within a team.
- Holds NPTC or Lantra qualifications in forestry-related practical skills like chainsaw operation, herbicide application, ATV use, or strimming.
- Possession of a full UK driving license or viable alternative arrangements to fulfill job responsibilities.
- Desirable qualifications include forestry or land management credentials, additional NPTC/Lantra certifications, emergency first aid at work with forestry focus, GCSE equivalents in Maths and English, and experience with Forester Web software.

- Annual salary of £26,959
