Job Summary
The Custodian role is essential for maintaining a safe, clean, comfortable, and appealing environment where students can learn, play, and grow effectively. This position is part of the Maintenance Department and reports to both the Principal and the Director of Maintenance, Safety, and Security.
Qualifications
- Certification of good health from a licensed physician.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- The Board may consider alternative qualifications it deems appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Keep the building and surrounding premises, including sidewalks and driveways, clean and orderly at all times.
- Ensure daily that all exit doors are open and panic bolts function properly during building occupancy.
- Sweep and vacuum classrooms daily, dust furniture regularly.
- Clean corridors after school and during the day as required.
- Disinfect bathrooms, toilet floors, sanitary fixtures, and drinking fountains every day.
- Wax and buff floors when necessary.
- Wash all windows inside and outside at least twice yearly or as needed.
- Maintain grounds free of rubbish and perform yard upkeep such as grass cutting and tree trimming to keep the grounds safe and attractive.
- Keep floors clean, attractive, and well-preserved.
- Perform minor building repairs as capable and assigned.
- Report major repair needs promptly to the Principal.
- Maintain regular servicing schedules for motors and mechanical equipment.
- Report any damage to school property immediately.
- Remain on premises during school hours and during authorized non-school hours as needed.
- Responsible for opening and closing buildings each school day, ensuring all doors, windows are secured, and lights are turned off (except safety lights) before leaving.
- Manage inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel, requesting replacements with sufficient lead time.
- Move furniture or equipment as required for various activities on Principal's direction.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
The role requires continuous speaking and listening, prolonged sitting or standing, regular use of hands and fingers, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. The custodian must be able to lift and move up to 20 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 30 pounds. Visual acuity including close, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment is necessary. The role demands physical, mental, and emotional stamina for effective performance, including strong reasoning, judgment, and decision-making capabilities.
Evaluation and Terms
Employee performance is assessed according to the Simpson County Board of Education policies for classified personnel. The position is a 235-day employment term with a compensation range of $14.22 to $21.43 per hour.
