Job description

Position Overview

The Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development at William & Mary is responsible for the creation, management, and evaluation of a comprehensive program aimed at enriching the student-athlete experience and enhancing their overall success during and following their collegiate careers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee a Student-Athlete Development Program, utilizing campus and department resources, with focus areas including mentorship, leadership training, career readiness, and community involvement.
  • Collaborate with university orientation leaders to develop specialized orientation sessions tailored for first-year and transfer student-athletes.
  • Facilitate student-athlete transitions beyond college sports by identifying needs and connecting them with suitable campus and community support services or advocating for expansion of resources.
  • Work with the Deputy Athletic Director to prepare and manage the program budget, forecasting expenses and resource needs.
  • Partner with the Cohen Career Center to provide workshops on interviewing, networking, resume building, internships, and job hunting skills.
  • Encourage intra-departmental community engagement by motivating student-athletes to support teammates' competitions and fostering connections with alumni networks.
  • Organize and oversee student-athlete community service and outreach programs in collaboration with the Office of Community Engagement.
  • Advise the Student-Athlete Advocacy Committee (SAAC), which comprises representatives from all varsity teams, coordinating philanthropic/social events and participating in NCAA-related legislative input.
  • Ensure the delivery of NCAA-required educational programs and coordinate other educational activities relevant to student-athletes.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts for prospective student-athletes on campus.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent blend of education, relevant work experience, and training.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a record of effective public speaking.
  • Proven leadership abilities, particularly in guiding and mentoring student-athletes.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of work.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse populations and multiple stakeholders.
  • Three to eight years of related experience, preferably involving student-athletes or roles within student affairs, higher education, or counseling sectors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or a closely related discipline.
  • Previous experience working directly with college student-athletes.

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Williamsburg, Virginia, representing William & Mary, a renowned public research university with a rich history dating back to 1693.
