Position Overview
The Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition is responsible for developing and overseeing a full-scale nutrition program designed to optimize the training, recovery, and competitive performance of student-athletes. This role operates under the supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations at the University of Idaho.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee and guide Performance Nutrition fellows, interns, and nutrition students while managing nutrition-related research projects.
- Deliver accurate, evidence-supported sports nutrition education to athletes, coaches across 14 varsity sports, and sport performance professionals.
- Assess body composition of athletes and educate relevant parties; formulate and supervise nutrition strategies critical for maximizing athletic performance.
- Develop, implement, and maintain nutrition policies and protocols to ensure adherence to NCAA and Big Sky Conference regulations.
- Provide personalized sports nutrition counseling for athletes aiming to adjust body composition, address special dietary requirements, or optimize health and performance.
- Direct daily nutrition-related functions, addressing a spectrum of health issues including eating disorders, weight management, gastrointestinal concerns, diabetes, concussion management, bone injuries, and soft tissue conditions.
- Maintain up-to-date professional skills and competencies necessary for effective practice in this specialty.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in nutrition science, kinesiology, or exercise physiology is mandatory at the time of hire.
- Active registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Possession of or immediate eligibility to apply for Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) certification in Idaho.
- Demonstrated experience in nutrition counseling and life skills development targeting athletes and coaching staff.
- Familiarity with research on physiological, nutritional, motor movement, and training factors influencing athletic performance.
- Proven ability to build professional relationships with staff, clients, and students while managing multiple projects simultaneously in an athletic setting.
Preferred Additional Credentials and Skills
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credentials.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills for designing and implementing empirically supported sports nutrition programs.
- Attention to detail, efficient project scheduling and completion, and strong work ethic.
- Understanding of and compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and state privacy and confidentiality laws.
- Creative and highly developed organizational abilities.
- Collaborative work style within a team of sport performance experts.
- Alignment with the core values upheld by the University of Idaho.
