Job Overview
Join Waccamaw Dermatology as a Transcriptionist responsible for accurately converting pathologist dictations related to patient medical histories, diagnoses, treatment details, test analyses, medications, and prognoses into precise pathology reports. This role is essential for ensuring clear and comprehensive documentation in medical records.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize shorthand, stenotype machines, or transcription equipment such as headsets and dictation devices to convert audio recordings into detailed electronic pathology reports with high accuracy and timeliness.
- Interpret and expand medical jargon and abbreviations to ensure clarity and precision in all pathology documentation.
- Submit transcribed reports for pathologist review and signature, incorporating any necessary corrections as directed.
- Proofread reports for spelling, grammar, clarity, consistency, and confirm appropriate use of medical terminology.
- Identify and resolve errors or inconsistencies in medical terms, leveraging medical dictionaries and references related to anatomy and physiology.
- Access and retrieve pathology reports, correspondence, and reference materials from information systems, libraries, internet sources, and medical references.
- Perform data entry and retrieval accurately to support pathology reports and transmission to pathologists.
- Maintain prompt preparation of pathology reports and manage an accurate medical database for patient records.
- Handle various clerical duties including mail management, phone correspondence, calendar maintenance, appointment scheduling, organizing meetings and travel, expense reimbursement processing, and subscription renewals. Maintain both paper and electronic filing systems effectively.
- Verify the accuracy of pathology reports and patient information in the system prior to dispatch to clients.
- Uphold strict confidentiality and adhere to all applicable State, Federal, professional regulations, including CLIA, HIPAA, safety, and OSHA standards.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications & Experience
- Possess at minimum a High School Diploma or equivalent qualification.
- Have at least two years of experience in medical transcription, particularly in pathology-related documentation.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Proficiency with word processing software and transcription equipment.
- Familiarity with medical transcription standards and practices.
- Excellent command of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Ability to type at a speed of 80 words per minute using transcription equipment.
- Skilled at using designated reference materials and medical dictionaries effectively.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately with sustained focus and attention to detail.
- Capable of building and maintaining positive professional relationships with colleagues, physicians, clients, and external entities.
Physical Requirements
- The position requires occasional standing, walking, sitting, hand manipulation, reaching, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, hearing, talking, tasting, or smelling.
- Occasional lifting or moving of objects up to 25 pounds is required.
- Visual acuity sufficient for close and distant vision and normal color perception is necessary.
Security and Compliance
This role involves handling Protected Health Information (PHI) classified at a high security level, requiring detailed access to sensitive personal medical information including demographics, diagnoses, treatment plans, and family medical history. Compliance with HIPAA and all related regulations is mandatory.
Working Hours
- Available shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday)
- Or 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday)
