Role overview
RAC is hiring a Superflex Roadside Mechanic for its Cheltenham area operation. This position is built for someone who can adapt quickly, work independently, and help members get moving again when they run into trouble on the road.
Pay and working pattern
The role offers a basic salary of £50,669, with the potential to earn up to £57,000 through bonuses and overtime. You’ll work an average of 40 hours per week across the year. Your rota is shared seven days ahead of time, and your core hours are confirmed three days before the shift.
Shift times can run between 06:00 and 02:00, so the role can involve early starts, late finishes, weekends, evenings, and bank holidays.
Work location
You’ll be based in the Cheltenham cluster and cover surrounding areas including Cheltenham, Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Stroud, south Cirencester, and towns in the Cotswolds. RAC plans the work locally so you can begin and end your day from home while focusing on helping members in your area.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll respond to roadside breakdowns and diagnose faults on the spot, then decide the best way to get each member back on the road. Jobs may involve technical troubleshooting, electrical issues, battery failures, flat tyres, and other varied call-outs.
You’ll also manage your own tools and kit, keep the van organised and stocked, and complete reports accurately.
What you need
To be considered, you’ll need a Level 2 light vehicle maintenance qualification or something equivalent, along with proven experience in technical, electrical, and diagnostic work. A full UK driving licence is essential. RAC is also looking for someone who can work flexibly at short notice and is open to travel, including overnight stays when required.
Equipment provided
RAC will provide your own van, fuel card, full uniform, essential tools, and diagnostic equipment from day one.
Benefits
This role comes with a strong package of employee benefits, including:
- Colleague share scheme with no cost to join, so you can share in the company’s future growth
- Free RAC Ultimate breakdown cover from your first day
- Car salary sacrifice scheme, including electric vehicle options after 12 months
- 23 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing to 25 days with service
- Up to 6.5% matched pension contributions
- Life cover worth up to 4 times your salary, or up to 10 times with flex benefits
- 24/7 confidential wellbeing support for you and your family
- Discounts on tools, technology, holidays, and more through Orange Savings
