Position Summary
The Security Specialist supports senior security personnel by managing the creation, assessment, implementation, and operation of methods and procedures to protect employees, information, property, operations, and materials. Responsibilities include reviewing and advising on security policies, ensuring compliance with mandated regulations, establishing procedures for obtaining Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Cards and badges for facility and system access, and serving as backup for Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer duties at the location. A thorough understanding of security program administration regulations, policies, and principles is necessary to interpret, explain, and enforce security measures effectively.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior security specialist in developing and operating safeguarding procedures for personnel and assets.
- Review security guideline changes; recommend local policy updates to maintain compliance.
- Manage processes for issuance of DoD CAC and related facility access badges.
- Act as alternate Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer when needed.
- Apply knowledge of security regulations and policies to support security program administration.
Requirements and Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
- Position requires successful completion of security clearance and suitability review, with access to classified information; failing to maintain clearance can result in termination.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
- Candidates must be eligible and suitable for Federal employment.
- Applicants should have at least 3 months of experience post latest competitive appointment in Federal service.
- New hires must pass E-Verify employment verification.
- At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level or equivalent within the Federal service is required.
- Specialized experience includes oversight of security protocols, physical access control systems management, processing security credentials, and liaison for personnel security programs.
- Education substitution available: Two years of progressively advanced graduate education or a master’s degree may substitute specialized experience (transcripts required).
Additional Information
- Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.
- Telework is limited, granted only under exceptional circumstances to support compelling Department of Defense needs.
- Temporary promotions may be possible, with potential to become permanent without competition.
- Employment is subject to Department of Defense workforce stability program restrictions.
- A one-year probationary period is required to evaluate performance, conduct, and alignment with agency/public interest.
- Additional vacancies may be filled within 120 days of the announcement close.
- This role is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Travel is rarely required.
- This position is not part of any bargaining unit.
- First-time federal hires usually start at step 1 pay for their grade.
- Employment of retired federal employees receiving annuities is governed by DoD policies.
- Security clearance level required may be secret or higher; background investigations may delay start date and are mandatory.
- Incumbents participate in the Security Professional Education Development (SPēD) Program, requiring Security Fundamentals Professional Certification within two years for designated Defense Security Positions.
- Criminal history checks may occur post-conditional offer.
