Role Overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking for a Railroad Flagger in Chattanooga, TN. This is a full-time, on-site position reporting to the District Manager. The role is focused on protecting crews working near tracks by managing train movements and applying federal railroad safety standards. The work supports Class 1 railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, state transportation rail projects, and contractors.

Compensation

Pay is set at $25 to $37 per hour, with the exact rate depending on experience.

Travel Requirements

This position involves significant travel, averaging roughly 50% to 85%, and may require being away for extended periods, including for months at a time.

Experience Needed

Applicants should have at least 2 years of relevant railroad experience, ideally in Maintenance of Way (MOW). Acceptable backgrounds include work with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, state DOT rail division, railroad supplier, contractor, or consultant.

Core Duties

The Railroad Flagger coordinates on-site work, communicates with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors, and leads safety briefings before work begins. The role also includes enforcing railroad, state, and federal rules, checking that contractors meet training requirements, identifying violations, preparing daily activity reports, and maintaining on-track safety in line with federal requirements.

Tools, Skills, and Work Style

The job calls for comfort with basic technology such as Citrix, email, phone, texting apps, Android tablets, and smartphones. Strong organization, attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to build client relationships are important. Knowledge of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety is also needed.

Work Conditions

This is a field-based role. Candidates must communicate clearly in English, be willing to travel or drive long distances, and be able to stand for long periods and walk on uneven ground. The work may involve exposure to extreme heat and cold, dust, and noise. Good near, far, color, and peripheral vision is required, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds is necessary.
