Role overview
HMP Highpoint is hiring prison officers for a challenging, hands-on position within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role is designed for someone who can stay calm under pressure, act with integrity and use strong interpersonal skills to make a constructive difference.
Prison officers help safeguard the public while supporting people in custody to turn their lives around. The work is varied, fast-moving and different every day, with scope to build experience and move into specialist areas over time.

There is no single background for a prison officer. People from varied careers and life experiences can succeed here, including parents, teachers, retail workers and armed forces personnel. What matters most is empathy, confidence, clear communication and the ability to develop professional relationships with offenders, even when situations are difficult.
You will also need to work well with colleagues, because teamwork is essential to maintaining safety for prisoners, staff and the wider establishment.
What the job involves
This is a dynamic role where duties can change throughout the day. At times you may be de-escalating conflict, at other times guiding, supporting or coaching people in custody. The position combines elements of security, care and encouragement, all within a highly structured environment.
Working pattern
The post requires availability for a range of shifts, including weekends.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £35,746 to £40,003. In addition to pay, the prison service offers structured training, career development and opportunities to specialise.
