Job description

Role Overview

Join NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi as the Platform Lead - Data, heading up enterprise data platforms that drive trusted analytics, reporting, and AI to support better decision-making and improved transport outcomes in New Zealand. This pivotal leadership position, based within the Chief Technology Office, will guide the strategy, architecture, delivery, and operational effectiveness of the organisation’s modern data platform capabilities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the enterprise data platform roadmap ensuring scalability, security, resilience, and alignment with organisational goals.
  • Drive the advancement of a contemporary data and analytics ecosystem incorporating Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Azure services.
  • Provide technical leadership in areas such as data engineering, enablement of analytics, self-service reporting, platform reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Strengthen governance, security, performance, and cost management to ensure stakeholder confidence in data services.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary platform teams adopting Agile, DevOps, and automation-first methodologies.
  • Collaborate with digital, business, and delivery partners to develop valuable data products, analytics solutions, and AI applications across NZTA.

Candidate Profile

  • Extensive experience steering enterprise data platform strategy, architecture, deployment, and operations in complex or large-scale environments.
  • Demonstrated technical mastery of modern data platforms, particularly Databricks, with familiarity in Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Azure Data Services, and lakehouse architectures highly regarded.
  • Proven success in leading cross-functional teams to deliver intricate technological solutions via clear direction and prioritisation in a collaborative environment.
  • Solid understanding of data engineering principles, data quality, governance frameworks, security, privacy considerations, and operational resilience.
  • Experience managing platform roadmaps, setting investment priorities, overseeing vendor relationships, and assessing technological risks.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, and influencing abilities capable of delivering strategic and technical advice to senior leadership.
  • Possession of tertiary qualifications, pertinent professional certifications, or equivalent hands-on experience in domains such as data engineering, analytics, cloud platforms, or AI.

The ideal candidate will also show knowledge of or openness to learning about Te Ao Māori, promoting tikanga and Te Reo Māori, as well as understanding or appreciating Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its importance within public sector operations.
