PHP Quality Assurance Lead

About the role

This is a remote, hourly contractor position focused on quality leadership for PHP AI training work. You will oversee the consistency and performance of trainers and QA contributors, reviewing AI-produced PHP code as well as reviewer output against project rules. The role calls for detailed written feedback, strong PHP knowledge, and the ability to keep quality processes running smoothly across distributed technical teams.

You will assess submissions for correctness, runtime behavior, framework understanding, debugging quality, readability, maintainability, performance, security, test coverage, formatting, instruction compliance, and rubric alignment. The work supports an AI data services organization that supplies training data to major AI companies and foundation model labs, so accuracy, executability, security, and clarity are important.

There is no active project available right away for this position. If you are a fit, you may be contacted first when relevant assignments open up, and you will also be considered for future opportunities through the expert network.

Selection process

Profile and qualifications

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or comparable hands-on experience.
• Very good written English, with the ability to interpret instructions and give clear technical feedback.
• At least 3 years of experience in PHP development, backend engineering, code review, QA, mentoring, or similar work.
• Solid knowledge of PHP 8+ concepts such as object-oriented programming, namespaces, Composer, autoloading, arrays, exceptions, type declarations, sessions, HTTP, REST APIs, database access, and error handling.
• Capability to review PHP work for common issues like code that will not run, unsafe SQL practices, poor validation, incorrect logic, outdated syntax, made-up APIs, or missing explanations.
• Preferred familiarity with Laravel, Symfony, PHPUnit, Pest, MySQL/PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, GitHub, CI/CD, static analysis, and PSR conventions.
• Experience guiding remote groups of trainers, annotators, reviewers, engineers, or QA specialists is a strong advantage.
• Comfort using Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, GitHub, and project management tools.
• Strong organization skills to manage documentation, style references, trackers, FAQs, calibration tasks, and honeypots.
• Prior exposure to AI training, LLM evaluation, code QA, or rubric-based review will be considered a plus.

Key duties

• Review selected PHP items and provide continuous feedback through direct messages.
• Evaluate AI-created PHP code, backend examples, debugging answers, API samples, database logic, and tests.
• Communicate guideline updates and PHP quality expectations to trainers and QAs on Discord.
• Respond to questions about PHP syntax, frameworks, runtime behavior, security, testing, and rubric meaning.
• Re-engage inactive contributors through follow-ups and tracking messages.
• Build and update PHP documentation, style references, examples, trackers, FAQs, honeypots, and onboarding resources.
• Lead onboarding and training calls for PHP trainers and QAs.
• Identify insecure, outdated, misleading, or non-production-ready PHP guidance.
• Detect repeated quality issues and help improve QA workflows.
