Job description

About Ka Puta Ka Ora Emerge Aotearoa

Ka Puta Ka Ora Emerge Aotearoa - Peer Services, formerly known as Mind & Body, have been supporting whānau and communities since 1998 using lived experience as a foundation. The organisation aims to empower individuals facing mental health and addiction challenges by fostering hope, personal strength, and meaningful connection. Services include peer-led support, advocacy, training, and consultancy focused on reducing stigma, social exclusion, and promoting mental health education within workplaces, schools, and community organisations.

Our Services

The Piki Peer Support Service offers free, personalised peer support to rangatahi aged 18–25 in the Wellington region, covering Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa. The service adapts to meet young people where and when they feel most comfortable, facilitating support at convenient times and locations.

Role Overview

As a Peer Support Worker, you will build authentic relationships with rangatahi and their whānau, providing empathetic support based on your personal lived experience with mental distress and/or addiction recovery. Your role involves encouraging and guiding young people towards resilience, confidence, and positive life changes.

This is a fixed-term, full-time position until 1 March 2027, typically requiring 30 flexible hours per week between 7am and 7pm, with occasional work outside these hours depending on the needs of those supported.

  • Personal recovery experience from mental health challenges and/or addiction, along with insights developed through this journey.
  • Current First Aid certification including CPR, or willingness to obtain it.
  • Experience developing positive connections with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Māori and Pasifika communities and their families.
  • Either existing skills or enthusiasm to develop abilities in group facilitation.
  • A positive mindset, sense of humour, and passion for supporting others.
  • Possession of a full New Zealand driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle, with petrol expenses reimbursed.

  • Access to ongoing training and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Support services focused on wellbeing, including employee assistance programs, supervision, and cultural leave options.
  • Perks like staff discounts on services such as Southern Cross and PB Tech.
  • Chance to join one of New Zealand's largest not-for-profit organisations and grow within it.
