Job description
Role Overview
The Medical Planner will spearhead the development of medical planning and space programming for diverse healthcare environments including hospitals, clinics, and specialty centers. This role involves creating functional layouts for critical clinical departments such as Operating Rooms, ICUs, Imaging Units, Emergency Departments, Outpatient Clinics, Inpatient Units, Laboratories, and Administrative Areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and programming of healthcare facility spaces tailored to medical requirements.
- Develop functional layouts catering to specialized clinical areas ensuring efficiency and patient-centric design.
- Engage closely with clinicians, administrators, architects, engineers, and consultants to translate clinical workflows into effective facility designs.
- Produce essential planning documents including space programs, adjacency diagrams, room data sheets, and departmental plans.
- Ensure designs comply with healthcare standards, building codes, and regulatory frameworks such as NFPA, ADA, JCIA, and local regulations.
- Coordinate medical equipment planning with architectural and engineering disciplines, including MEP teams.
- Review architectural and engineering drawings for consistency with healthcare planning mandates.
- Participate in all stages of projects starting from concept development, schematic design, detailed design, documentation, site coordination, to commissioning.
- Support design reviews, technical workshops, and client presentations effectively.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to optimize the operation, safety, and adaptability of healthcare facilities.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Healthcare Design, or a related field is essential.
- Master’s degree in Architecture, Healthcare Planning, Healthcare Administration, or a similar discipline is preferred.
- Professional certification or specialized training in healthcare facility planning or healthcare design is a significant advantage.
- At least 10 years of demonstrated experience in healthcare planning, hospital architecture, or medical facility design.
- Proven expertise in hospital space programming and medical center planning.
- Deep knowledge of healthcare design regulations including NFPA 99, ADA, JCIA, and local healthcare laws.
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Smartsheet is beneficial.
- Familiarity with medical equipment planning tools and data-driven space planning systems.
- Ability to interpret clinical processes and develop compliant, efficient layouts.
- Understanding of healthcare MEP systems coordination including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and health, safety, environmental requirements.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, presentation, and cross-disciplinary coordination capabilities.
