Job description
About the Role
MongoDB's Storage Layer Services (SLS) team is pioneering the redesign of the cloud storage architecture, focusing on building highly performant, multi-tenant distributed storage services that enhance the existing Atlas storage stack and increase efficiency for various customer workloads. As the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Manager for this team, you will collaborate with engineering teams to establish Service Level Objectives (SLOs), develop capacity plans, and uphold the reliability, durability, and operational integrity of the storage systems that support MongoDB Atlas.
This role involves growing and guiding a senior group of SREs as foundational members of this emerging organization and playing a pivotal part in executing a long-term roadmap for MongoDB's cloud storage architecture. The position is based in Dublin, supporting a hybrid working mode.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and cultivate a team of 6 to 8 engineers by creating a positive work environment, managing career development, conducting performance evaluations, and addressing any obstacles swiftly.
- Establish and steer a clear technical vision and strategic roadmap for the distributed multi-tenant storage systems, balancing both long-term infrastructure planning and immediate engineering priorities.
- Engage directly with technical work including leading architectural reviews, code review processes, and offering guidance during complex operational situations.
- Serve as the main point of contact for the Storage Layer Services SRE team, collaborating intensively with other engineering leaders to ensure alignment and manage expectations of stakeholders.
Candidate Profile
- Over ten years of experience handling software and distributed systems operations, with at least two years in engineering management.
- A customer-centric approach, treating internal developers as the primary users of the platform.
- Proven ability to optimize processes and workflows for enhanced efficiency.
- A preference for automation to minimize manual tasks by developing software solutions to reduce toil.
- Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, containerization technologies, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Crossplane, or Operators to support informed technical decisions.
- Experience operating or supporting large-scale stateful storage or database systems, with a solid understanding of durability, consistency, and recovery trade-offs.
- Capability to convert intricate business and engineering needs into structured, phased technical roadmaps.
- High levels of empathy, ownership, responsibility, and accountability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical contexts.
Additional Valuable Skills
- Experience leading major architectural transformations including transitioning from legacy to new multi-tenant storage architectures and managing significant data and workload migrations that require strict availability and durability.
- Competence in managing and scaling infrastructure across multi-cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Designing secure, scalable, multi-tenant runtime environments.
