Your Opportunity
Joining TAFE Queensland as a Laboratory Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting teaching staff by providing high-quality technical assistance. This support ensures that practical learning environments effectively align with curriculum delivery. Reporting to the Educational Operations Manager, this temporary position (0.25 FTE, 12-month term) is primarily based at the Sunshine Coast Health Institute campus, with possible work at other campuses.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and exemplify a robust safety culture, actively supporting Workplace Health Safety Systems across the East Coast region.
- Operate, prepare, and maintain clinical laboratory equipment and facilities to facilitate all scheduled educational and simulation activities efficiently.
- Manage stock levels for clinical laboratory materials, including ordering, invoicing, and records, ensuring consumables are consistently available to maintain smooth laboratory operations.
- Ensure chemicals are stored and disposed of safely after use, and uphold cleanliness and orderliness in simulated laboratory environments and equipment.
- Support teaching staff by preparing and setting up resources and demonstrations within lab and simulation environments.
- Schedule and perform routine maintenance or coordinate calibration and upkeep of laboratory equipment.
- Maintain and improve quality assurance and safety protocols for all laboratories, updating procedures as needed.
- Promote adherence to TAFE Queensland’s quality policies, fostering an environment committed to high-quality work through rigorous quality system documentation.
- Advance organisational transformation and culture by embodying core values like Safety First, Collaboration, Customer Focus, Initiative, and Responsibility.
Assessment Criteria
- Demonstrable understanding of healthcare practices and compliance with workplace health and safety laws and Australian Standards within nursing and healthcare simulation contexts, evidenced by prior experience.
- Knowledge and hands-on experience with fundamental laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
- Familiarity with the calibration, maintenance, and operation of nursing simulation tools such as glucometers, vital monitors, and simulation manikins.
- Proven ability to function effectively in team environments while managing flexible and adaptable workloads through strong organisational skills.
- Advanced communication and customer service abilities to collaboratively work with diverse stakeholders and colleagues aiming at exemplary client service.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Possession of a Nursing qualification, Diploma of Health Care, or equivalent; candidates pursuing these qualifications combined with relevant laboratory experience will also be considered.
