Job description
About Steamship Mutual
Steamship Mutual is a leading provider of Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance with a workforce of 250 employees worldwide. Headquartered near Liverpool Street station in London, the company also operates offices in Bermuda, Brazil, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, New York, Japan, and Singapore.
Role Overview
We are seeking two motivated university graduates to start a career in marine insurance claims. As a mutual P&I Club, we insure shipowners and charterers globally. Although based primarily in London, regional presence in major shipping hubs enables close collaboration with our London team and Members.
In this role, you will manage a broad range of claims, providing not only claim payments but also expert legal and strategic support. This involves engagement in complex litigation and arbitration processes across various jurisdictions by working closely with external lawyers and technical specialists. Your role will be pivotal in maintaining and fostering strong relationships between the Club and its Members.
Programme Structure
You will rotate through the three London-based claims teams in six-month intervals, gaining experience with Members from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Additionally, you will engage with Underwriting, Loss Prevention, Reinsurance, and Finance departments to develop a comprehensive understanding of P&I insurance.
As part of the training, you will complete at least Modules 1 and 2 of the Protection & Indemnity Qualification (P&IQ)—the recognized industry certification. Continuous learning and development opportunities will be available throughout the 18-month programme, which commences in Autumn 2026.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should be university graduates with a strong academic record and excellent communication skills. While prior marine insurance experience is not required, candidates should possess an aptitude for conveying complex ideas clearly, particularly with backgrounds in law, history, English, Classics, or modern languages.
Ideal candidates demonstrate eagerness to learn, a robust work ethic, attention to detail, effective collaboration skills, and a genuine interest in developing a career in the insurance and shipping industry.
Benefits and Company Culture

- Benefit from a competitive hybrid working policy fostering work-life balance.
