Role Overview
Reporting directly to the Facility Manager, the Fourth Class Operating Engineer ensures the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of essential utilities and building systems for a GMP-certified large-scale hybrid greenhouse. The role involves managing boiler and heating systems, refrigeration and chilled water units, HVAC and dehumidification systems, as well as automated controls in a regulated production setting to guarantee compliance and reliability around the clock.
Responsibilities
- Operate and oversee central plant systems including boilers (steam or hydronic), refrigeration/chilled water, HVAC, air handling, and dehumidification equipment.
- Respond promptly to BAS/automation alarms by troubleshooting and resolving issues effectively.
- Conduct field rounds and monitor BAS trend data (temperature, flow, pressure, differential pressure, amperage, and levels) to evaluate equipment and utility performance.
- Identify irregular operations, document equipment status, and take necessary actions to maintain safe and consistent environmental conditions 24/7.
- Perform regular preventative maintenance and minor repairs on pumps, motors, compressors, valves, switches, gauges, meters, and controls.
- Clean, lubricate, and adjust mechanical components to optimize reliability and minimize downtime.
- Coordinate with contractors and service providers during scheduled maintenance and repair sessions.
- Maintain tools, parts, and workplace areas in a safe, organized, and audit-ready state.
- Document continuous operation and monitoring activities adhering to industrial best practices, TSSA regulations, SOPs, and insurance requirements.
- Assist in updating SOPs, safe work procedures, and lockout/tagout protocols to ensure compliance and safety.
- Ensure operations conform to TSSA Operating Engineers Regulations (O. Reg. 219/01) and applicable refrigeration codes.
- Manage documentation and certification renewals for regulated equipment such as boilers, chillers, pressure vessels, and fuel safety devices via the TSSA portal.
- Participate actively in incident investigations and root cause analyses as needed.
- Collaborate with cultivation and operations teams to maintain environmental setpoints and promptly address deviations.
- Support initiatives aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, system reliability, and overall operational resilience.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.

Additional Information
This position is full-time and located in Tiverton, Ontario. Employees benefit from extended health and dental coverage, paid vacation, and participation in a company-supported retirement savings plan. The salary range for this role is between $65,000 and $70,000 annually.
