Overview
Urban Cars operates a fleet of 76 Toyota Vitz taxis throughout Accra, integrated with ride-hailing services like Yango. We are currently recruiting for two essential operational positions — Fleet Dispatcher and Hiring & Training Manager (Scout). Choose the role best suited to your skills and interests.
Position A: Hiring & Training Manager (Scout)
This field-based role involves recruiting, onboarding, training, and retaining qualified drivers for our fleet.
- Identify and recruit new drivers through various channels including job platforms, social media, and physical locations such as lorry parks and fuel stations.
- Conduct phone interviews, clarify job conditions, and arrange office visits for candidates.
- Maintain a talent pool of at least 50 qualified drivers ready to enter lease agreements promptly.
- Verify documentation such as driving licenses, insurance, and voter IDs, alongside database checks.
- Prepare and formalize lease agreements, then input driver and vehicle details into the Opteum/Optic system.
- Provide training focused on the Yango driver app usage, peak operating hours, profitable driving tactics, safe vehicle handling, routine maintenance, and official interactions.
- Support new drivers during their initial 14 days by monitoring their performance, addressing queries, and reducing early attrition.
- Conduct daily driver satisfaction surveys and communicate concerns to supervisors.
- Conduct regular field inspections covering driver skills and vehicle condition including amenities and cleanliness.
- Deliver comprehensive daily reports to supervisors covering recruitment activity, training progress, driver retention, and the candidate pipeline.
Authority: Request driver information, issue mandatory instructions to drivers, mechanics, and dispatchers, and propose vehicle locks to management. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Position B: Dispatcher – Control Room
The dispatcher oversees the entire fleet's operation by monitoring GPS, assigning trips, and ensuring service efficiency from a control center.
- Utilize dispatch software and GPS tracking to monitor all 76 Vitz vehicles.
- Assign closest available vehicle to new trip requests promptly.
- Track ongoing trips, manage delays, and reroute vehicles to avoid traffic congestion at major points like Circle, Spintex, Madina, and Tema Motorway.
- Communicate with drivers via radio or phone and handle passenger calls dealing with delays, lost items, or fare disputes.
- Escalate critical issues to higher management as needed.
- Maintain detailed logs on trip assignments, fuel consumption, vehicle availability, and driver records.
- Prepare reports using Excel or Google Sheets and provide operational summaries at shift end.
Authority: Obtain information from drivers and staff and issue compulsory instructions to drivers and mechanics.
Shared Requirements for Both Roles
- Extensive knowledge of Accra and Tema roads, including shortcuts and peak traffic patterns.
- Proficiency in English and Pidgin English; Twi or Ga language skills are advantageous.
- Comfortable using technology such as GPS systems, Excel/Google Sheets, and specialized platforms (Opteum/Optic for Scouts).
- Demonstrated honesty, reliability, and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Willingness to work onsite in Accra with flexible shift timings.
Additional Details
Performance benchmarks for the Hiring & Training Manager include maintaining a steady recruitment pipeline of at least 50 prospective drivers, preventing shift cancellations due to driver shortages, limiting driver attrition within the initial 14-day period, and submitting daily reports consistently. For the Dispatcher role, multitasking abilities, calmness during high-demand periods, and excellent knowledge of road networks are essential. Both roles require physical presence in Accra and full-time commitment.
