About the Role

A horticulture company based in Christchurch, New Zealand, is seeking a dedicated Development Scientist to create and optimize innovative plant cell lines addressing real-world agricultural and industrial challenges. The scientist will work closely with the Chief Scientist and company founders to understand biochemical pathways and develop targeted traits in plant cell systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and independently conduct experiments to develop and refine plant cell lines.
  • Leverage knowledge in plant biology and biochemical pathways to manipulate and enhance cellular traits.
  • Improve tissue culture workflows and experimental methodologies.
  • Independently troubleshoot biological issues and devise effective solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with senior leadership to translate scientific discoveries into practical applications for industry.
  • Generate, analyze, and report experimental data to influence development directions.

Candidate Profile

  • Strong foundation in plant biology, especially in cell biology and biochemical pathways.
  • PhD is preferred; equivalent industrial experience will also be considered.
  • Practical experience in plant tissue culture techniques.
  • Capacity to independently plan experiments, solve problems, and drive projects to completion.
  • Several years of research or relevant industry experience.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience with callus induction, somatic embryogenesis, or cryopreservation is advantageous.

Excluded Expertise Areas

  • The role does not involve CRISPR or gene editing technologies.
  • No focus on genomics or genetic characterization.
  • Genetic engineering approaches are not part of this position.
  • The role excludes work on bioreactors or liquid suspension culture scale-up.
