Job description

Role Overview

As a Design Engineer at Rollform Equipment, you will independently handle the complete 3D modeling and assembly design for tube mills and roll forming machine lines. Your responsibilities include creating detailed models of mill stands, roll tooling, forming and sizing sections, welding sections, and other auxiliary units using SolidWorks. Additionally, you will convert 2D drawings, whether customer-provided, legacy, or vendor sourced, into comprehensive 3D models and assemblies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the entire 3D design process from initial concept modeling, detailed part design, to assembly integration, ensuring clash and interference checks are conducted and precise drawings are produced.
  • Utilize SolidWorks features such as sheet metal, weldment, and assembly tools for modeling structural frames, fabricated parts, and machined components.
  • Integrate standard part libraries and custom components, generating and verifying accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) directly from 3D assemblies.
  • Create 2D fabrication and general arrangement drawings in AutoCAD from verified 3D models, including incorporation of tolerances, welding symbols, and BOMs.
  • Interpret customer specifications and process needs to design manufacturable 3D machine components.
  • Conduct 3D design validation tasks such as fitment, interference checks, and mechanism motion analysis before releasing drawings for production.
  • Perform structural and mechanical engineering calculations for components like shafts, bearings, drives, and frames.
  • Collaborate with production, procurement, and quality departments to confirm manufacturability and cost-effectiveness of designs.
  • Review vendor and fabricator drawings to ensure alignment with the intended 3D design concepts.
  • Maintain and control the revision of 3D model libraries and standardized parts.

Candidate Profile

  • Educational background in Mechanical Engineering, preferably B.E., B.Tech, or Diploma.
  • Between 5 to 10 years of experience in design engineering roles, specifically in cold rolling mills, tube mills, or other large capital equipment manufacturing.
  • Proven capability in creating complex SolidWorks 3D models and assemblies from scratch; familiarity with assemblies, sheet metal, weldments, and both top-down and bottom-up design methodologies.
  • Strong expertise in interpreting 2D drawings and transforming them into accurate 3D models.
  • Competency in AutoCAD for 2D drawings derived from 3D models.
  • Sound knowledge of mechanical design fundamentals including GD&T, tolerancing, material choices, and structural designs.
  • Understanding of components used in heavy machinery such as rolls, bearings, gearboxes, drive systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Experience in preparing comprehensive BOMs and fabrication and assembly drawings suitable for shop floor use.
