Conversational Character Designer

About the Role

We are looking for a talented and imaginative Conversational Character Designer to craft natural and captivating dialogues for AI characters, digital humans, and virtual personas. This role involves blending expertise in dialogue creation, storytelling, psychology, and conversational AI to shape how these synthetic characters communicate, respond, and express emotions consistently and distinctively over time.

You will collaborate with AI developers, character artists, writers, behavioral experts, and experience designers to translate character identities into engaging conversational experiences that feel authentic and context-sensitive.

Key Responsibilities

• Create conversational identities and dialogue systems suited for AI-driven characters, including digital and virtual personas.
• Define each character's distinct voice, vocabulary, tone, rhythm, communication style, and conversational habits.
• Transform character personality traits, backgrounds, motives, and worldviews into unique conversational behaviors.
• Design dialogue frameworks governing how characters start, sustain, steer, and end conversations.
• Develop conversational flows for various scenarios such as introductions, daily dialogues, emotional exchanges, conflict resolution, storytelling, and problem-solving.
• Compose sample dialogues to establish and maintain the character’s voice and identity.
• Specify how characters ask questions, share opinions, disagree, clarify ideas, express uncertainty, and handle unexpected inputs.
• Incorporate emotional communication elements including empathy, humor, hesitation, concern, enthusiasm, and frustration appropriately.
• Develop rules ensuring character consistency across topics and interaction settings.
• Design long-term conversational continuity referencing past interactions, user preferences, and relationship history.
• Work with behavioral designers to align dialogues with emotional states and behavioral guidelines.
• Collaborate with AI engineers to convert dialogue concepts into AI prompts, system instructions, response rules, and behavioral specifications.
• Create conversation samples and test cases to train, assess, and improve AI responses.
• Review AI-generated dialogues to identify issues such as generic language, repetitive responses, mismatched tone, broken context, or character drift.
• Design edge-case scenarios testing responses to ambiguity, sensitive topics, unexpected questions, and conflicting goals.
• Document dialogue guidelines, character voice bibles, and conversational style manuals.
• Design multilingual or culturally adaptive conversational styles when necessary.
• Partner with voice and performance teams to ensure the written dialogues are effectively delivered via speech and voice synthesis.
• Conduct user conversational testing and analyze feedback to enhance engagement, clarity, and character authenticity.
• Research and remain updated on advances in conversational AI, synthetic characters, voice interfaces, and interactive storytelling.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fields such as Creative Writing, Linguistics, Communication, Psychology, Performing Arts, Screenwriting, Game Design, Interaction Design, Artificial Intelligence, or related disciplines.
• A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in dialogue writing, conversational design, narrative or character development, game writing, conversational AI, or related areas.
• Proven talent for producing distinctive character voices and believable dialogues.
• Strong foundation in conversation structure, storytelling, human communication, and interpersonal dynamics.
• Excellent writing and editing abilities with a focus on dialogue and character voices.
• Insight into personality, motivation, emotion, and their effects on communication.
• Experience in designing dialogues for games, interactive media, virtual characters, chatbots, AI assistants, or digital humans is highly valued.
• Familiarity with generative AI technologies, large language models, conversational AI, or AI-powered agents.
• Competence in creating structured conversational systems beyond isolated dialogue lines.
• Experience in developing dialogue flows, conversation trees, response guidelines, or conversational system specifications.
• Ability to preserve voice consistency across extended conversations and various scenarios.
• Knowledge of prompt design, AI response evaluation, or conversational testing is advantageous.
• Exposure to voice interfaces, speech tech, voice acting, or performance is a plus.
• Excellent collaboration skills to work smoothly with technical and creative teams.
• Fluency in English; multilingual abilities and experience designing multilingual dialogues are assets.
• A portfolio showcasing dialogue writing, character voice crafting, conversational design, interactive storytelling, AI conversations, or related projects is strongly recommended.
